I just bought my 2014 Silverado 1500 CC High Country with 46K miles. Near perfect condition. Dealer was asking $38K on the lot, but I got it for $35,500.

That's the entirely wrong way to purchase anything, Have your checkbook ready to go and get a bottom line price. If you don't like the price be ready to walk away...

Indeed! Dealers absolute love payment buyers. Much easier to manipulate. The dumbest thing you can do at a dealer is let them know what you want to pay.

I used to buy that way and haggle for days. I now do my research and find the deals and research average trade in and tell them what I'll pay. Then I wait for them to call me. I usually would have three- four deals going. The car a I least expected to be driving I'm driving.

Lol. Unless youre paying it all off with cash, youll have a monthly payment. Some people cannot go over a certain monetary amount due to a thing called bills.

I also have heard you should never go into a dealer and say "I need my payment at this". Because they can charge you more and move money. I have heard salesman love this.

They love to extend your payments out as far as possible to "get that number" because it is all about the interest you end up paying at that point. They've tried that on us for the past four new vehicles...we typically take 48 month loans and pay it off in a year...car loans are good for credit scores.

The other thing is that most never pay it off when the payments are stretched out and are upside down during the next trade...I watched a kid (maybe 25) buy a new truck when we were buying our Equinox this past spring, he was trading a (new looking, high end) 1500 on a new high end 1500...when it was said and done, he was paying a loan for $80k (loan value, not including interest) on a $53k truck purchase! (Yeah, the dealer shouldn't leave paperwork just laying out in plain view) They got him for $27k somehow. They love people who trade before their loan is paid...

They also like to up sell you on things like paint protectant and additional warranty.

It's humorous to see Craigslist too...you can tell every buyer who is selling a car that is upside down...I'm selling my 2004, 2500 Silverado WT, with only 359k miles, I'm only the 38th owner, for $28,000. I've seen a lot of people trying to sell ten year old trucks for more than I can buy one new...

It is a free country and everybody buys a vehicle how they want but I totally agree with you. I have only had one car payment and that was my first truck, just out of college and still learning my way through life. Paid that truck off in half the time and have paid cash for every vehicle, motorcycle, home improvements, appliances, etc,. ever since. You can try to get the best deal you can but if you are paying interest then that good deal you got is being eroded away.

I dont know about everyone else but there is no way i can afford these trucks out right living in south ny with a family bills and mortgage. Always had loans, shopped for best deals. I get used car loans at a 2.5-2.8 apr. So over the life of the loan i pay 3 to 4k in interest it is what it is. Chalk it up to what is needed to be done.

I agree with so much of that statement. Last year I decided I wanted a truck so I search months for a used 14-15 Sierra or Silverado but the dealers overpriced them. My uncle made it easy on me he told me he will help me take out a new truck(I'm only 20 so definitely needed his credit score) so the search for a new Silverado/Sierra began. When we arrived at the dealer both him and my dad told me not to tell the sale person anything about how much I can afford or my monthly payments, so I stayed back and watch them work. During the test drive the sales person asked me about 4 times what kind of payment I was looking for. He thought he could get that out of me but sure didn't.

I'm not clear what you mean that telling a dealer what you want to pay is dumb. I always tell the dealer what I want to pay which is always less than they want me to pay! I believe you're referring to monthly payments. I suggest potential buyers have financing in place before working out a price. If the dealer can offer a better financing package than you've already arranged then this is a bonus!

Indeed. The one modification I would make is not to tell the dealer what you want to pay but rather what you are going to pay. If you've done your homework the number you quote will be doable and your job is to find the dealer who will do it.

Around here they use the "Black Book" for values (which only a dealer can get, and is always about 1/3 less than Blue Book values)!

Not sure I understand. I think Black Book is available to anyone. Go to the Chevy or GMC web page. If you 'build' a car and search for results on dealer's lots, select a car to look at it. One of the options is to check your trade in a value. If you select it, you can run your vehicle using Black Book.

Oh, I have to make a monthly payment alright to myself. lol

As far as bills, I'm able to bank ~70% of my check every week. I was blessed with parents that made sure I had everything I needed when I was growing up, not everything I wanted. Somehow it rubbed off...

I think 31k is pretty low, I have 2016 that I was looking at trading in, LT 4x4 5.3 Double Cab SIlverado which had a 49k sticker when I bought it in late 2015, the negotiated price on the truck was 39k or 40k (I can't remember). The same dealer I bought it from said they'd give me 29k for it now. Seeing as I've only had it for about 19 months I can't justify trading it at this point so I'll keep it a while longer... Point being if my LT albeit a very loaded LT is worth 29k I'd imagine your couple year older HC has to be worth at least a few thousand more than my truck.

Man, I dunno, looks like I can find quite a few HC's for 35-38k advertised in my area with 25-45k miles.. That trade offer might be close to correct.
