Low Mileage Maint Schedule

Hey guys,

New owner of a 2017 Silverado 1500 LT Crew here.  At this point I do not drive a ton and expect I will be putting about 4,000 - 6,000 miles a year on the truck for the time being.  80% will be in town, city miles.  What should I be doing maintenance wise for this type of driving?  Living in Dallas, TX, so road salt is not a huge issue as of now.  I've read change oil and rotate the tires every six months, but beyond that, I'm kind of lost.  Also, any other general maintenance tips would be great!

My goal is to get a great amount of life out of the truck, and drive it until it won't drive anymore.  With this type of mileage, with good maintenance, how long do you guys think the truck could last?  I had an 04 Avalanche that finally saw the end due to transmission and rust problems.  It made it about 13 years/178,000 miles, which was a little disappointing.  But hey, at least it going downhill gave me a reason to buy a new truck!

I have read about some issues with AFM, but my truck does not appear to be ailing.  With that being said, I still plan to get a tuner and turn the AFM off once my warranty is expired.  However, that is several years down the road still.

Also looking for recommendations on running/step bars.

Thanks,

Joe

This is about my mileage. I just do a yearly oil change.

Also you don't need a tune to disable afm. Just drive in manual mode or get an obd afm disabler.

Being that your driving is city I would drive it in 5th or 7th gear depending on your transmission type.

This way no AFM activation.

Longevity is a tough one. 200 k +.

I'd change the oil and rotate the tires annually.  I would drive in Drive and forget about the tune or AFM.  I follow this maintenance schedule with my wife's car.  She is a light driver and has 52 K kms  (32 K miles)  on her 10 year old car.  It is kept outdoors, runs perfectly and is rust free.  If you notice your AFM by any means other than the green indicator on your DIC then take your truck in for warranty repair.

My wife last three cars are still around, 01 Acura intagra type R 30K miles, 06 Elantra 101K, 11 Genesis 80K miles. The Acura is a toy, the Elantra was given to our daughter after 5 years now going to her son, the Genesis is her DD, one year oil changes and rotation for all.

Yearly oil changes? Mileage is one thing, but what about condensation or other contaminants?

Condensation evaporates when you get the oil above 212

I normally don't put more than 3000-4000 miles on my 2500 in a year.  I do annual oil changes.  those of us with construction and farm equipment, we are familiar with annual oil changes, so doing that with a vehicle is no different.  Some ag equipment is only used once a year and the oil sits in it all year.  No oil related problems.   And I live in the wide weather cycles of middle Iowa.  All my equipment gets annual oil changes and my 2500 is no different.    If one is not racking up a lot of miles in a year, then just change out annually and rest easy.

An oil change once a year using a good filter and the recommended oil should be fine.  You didn't say how far you travel for a single trip either miles or time, but it's a good idea to occasionally get everything up to operating temp so that any condensation is burned off.  Take a 15-20 minute drive that includes some freeway driving.   For tire rotation, once a year should work unless you are making lots of turns.  Make sure you keep an eye on tire pressure too.

As far as steps, I installed the chrome GM steps on my 2017 crew cab LTZ Silverado.  I got them at the dealership where I bought my truck, but got a good discount.  They took about 15 minutes per side to install and I didn't even have to jack the truck up for clearance.  I liked the width of the step compared to the round style.

Thanks for the advice!  My trips are usually pretty short, so i'll make a point to try and take it on the freeway once in a while.  As far as the side steps, what did they run you on price roughly?

GM also recommends annual oil changes for those that don't put on enough miles to trigger an OC recommendation by the OLM.

The steps were just over $650 (with my discount) and $57 state sales tax.   P/N 84106507

You can get the 6” steps in chrome or black on eBay for a pretty good discount. I’ve seen them as cheap as $535. No tax, free shipping.

I've been driving my like the OP for over 20 years now, between 4k and 6k miles a year on a truck.  I have a company truck I drive during the week and am usually on 2 wheels when I can on the weekends.  I have always done an annual oil change or at 5k miles, which ever comes first and this back when people still used regular old dino oil and never a problem.  I rotate my tires every 10k miles which is usually once every 2 years and have always got 60K miles or more out of set.
