Infotainment Question

Hello All,  I have a 2016 Silverado LT.  It didn't come with the feature to project your phones google map screen to the screen on your dash.  However when I plug my phone into one of the USB ports in the center console I get a message pop up on my phone stating something along the lines of the device you connected to was unable to do something.  which tells me that it is capable of doing so but doesn't know how.  So is there a firmware update or patch that can be applied to give my infotainment center this capability?

If it’s the first time plugging in your phone, you’ll have to ensure that your phone (iPhone) is setup for Car Play. There settings in the phone for Apple play. Once that’s done, it should recognize it. Not sure if Android.

I could be wrong but I don't think its that.  When you go to the home page on the truck's screen it doesn't have the icon for that feature.

You'll have to watch the message. It could be saying unable to charge or something. It will usually be in your notifications, too.

Here is a screen shot.  If it was just a simple usb charging port I would not be getting this message.  Something is trying to communicate with the cellphone which is generating this message.  which makes me think that if there was a firmware update or patch for the infotainment system I might be able to get that functionality.

Sometimes you have to change the type of connection the phone is using. It’s trying to access the music stored on your phone, I’m guessing.

This used to be in the notifications, you would touch the notification and change the type of connection. Camera was one of the options. MTP may have been another. Try those options and see what you get. It may not be the system at all.

Yes there is an update.  Some of the late-2015 and early-2016 models did not come with the radio configured for this.  Your dealer is supposed to install the update for free if you ask for it.

Do you know if there is any documentation on this like a TSB?  It would be nice to have ammunition loaded if you know what I mean before walking into the lions den.

So I took my truck down to the dealership this morning and they were unable to update my head unit with the feature but were willing to sell me a $1,200.00 gm replacement with built in navigation.  Very Disappointed.

That stinks.  There were a small number of 2016 trucks that were built with leftover 2015 HMI's.  If you got one of those there is no way to update it without replacing the HMI (there are guys on these forums that can do that if you really want it).

It does?!!!  (maybe not on a '15) I wish.  I know that Pandora and iTunes kind of does that with album art.

Yeah I really want it but it's one thing to pay an hour's worth of labor and another totally different thing to spend hundreds if not a thousand plus dollars for it. If I had that kind of money sitting around I would have made sure it was in the new truck I was buying.
