Shocks going bad at low mileage

Recommended Posts

Is this a common issue?

My 16 Crew Cab LT feels like it's shocks are already shot. They don't dampen anything and they pick up every minor imperfection on the road. I have the black shocks that come stock with the LT 1500.

I only have 25k miles on it. I have a feeling if I take them to the dealer, they are goto tell me that they're okay since it's still under warranty.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I definitely want new shocks but I can't decide what I want. I don't need any crazy performance off road shocks. I just want something that gives me a softer ride. I understand that I'll never have a "soft" ride but I know it can be softer than how it rides now.

Was thinking about Bildsteins or the adjustable Ranchos.

The aftermarket Ranchos, which are never to be confused with the OEM Ranchos, are a good shock, especially the adjustable one they sell. You can't go wrong with Bilsteins. They are sweet.

Have you first verified your tires have the correct pressure in them? do you have 20" or 22" wheels?

How do you know the shocks are bad? Are you comparing the ride to your wife's car?

Trucks are designed to carry some weight. If you are driving around empty or with large wheels, you are going to feel every bump. That's just how trucks are. Try adding some weight in the bed, lowering tire air pressure, etc. there may be nothing wrong with the shocks.

Yes. My tire pressure is 35psi all the way around. I have 18in wheels with the stock Goodyear SR-A's.

I'm not comparing the ride to my wife's Explorer. I'm comparing it to my last truck. I know for a fact these shocks aren't doing what they are supposed to do. A minor bump rattles the windows and is extremely jarring. I'd worry if a manufacturer designed a truck to ride this shitty.

You could probably drop the tire pressure to 30 psi if not hauling, find a tire load chart and see. I like my Bilstien 5100s...

I have had to replace the shocks after 30K miles on both Chevy SUV's I have owned. Good shocks on the 2500HD and replaced those only to get Rancho adjustable shocks. The Rancho shocks I set on a medium stiffness level when the bed is empty and when carrying a camper or towing a heavy trailer I increase the stiffness on front and rear shocks. Best standard replacement shocks for most trucks are the Bilstein 5100.

I use the recommended tire pressure shown on the cab. Tire pressure charts are worse than worthless as you will end up with both uneven tire wear and an unsafe truck with poorer handling and braking performance. Under inflated tires also run hotter and this increases chance of bead separation and a blowout.

I've got about 34k on my 2016 LT and I feel like the shock are shot too... Granted I've put a little too much weight in the bed a few times.
