Rancho OE shock failure

I bought my 2017 LT Z71 4X4 Regular cab back in July. The right rear shock is showing "Sweating", that's Dealership speak for the shock is a piece of crap, we know it, but we're trying to blow smoke up...well you know.  They have confirmed the shock is bad and have ordered a replacement which is on backorder.  It has been over two weeks and I'm still waiting.  From browsing this and other forums, it sounds like the OE Rancho's have a high failure rate.  Mine went out at 6000 miles.  I feel like I should just buy new Bilsteins's or Rancho's, but I hate to waste the warranty and spend out of pocket.  Anyone else have this happen?

You answered your own question, so what are you trying to accomplish with a new thread? What is a high failure rate? Just what you read on the forums? They aren't nearly as bad as a few make them seem, they are just biased and regurgitating what they read online. If it failed it will get replaced, stuff fails. Ride the OE ranchos until you are ready for something different then get them replaced. I am the same way with not wanting to waste free stuff (tires, shocks, springs, ect) without getting some use out of them unless I absolutely have to.

You will get a few people come in here proclaiming the Ranchos are the worst ever and BIlstein 5100's are gods gift to shocks, but this weekend I spent some time in my buddies new Sierra Denali with the magnetic ride shocks, I have stock Ranchos and have two buddies with the Bilsteins, here is where they rate. The Denali rode quite a bit better than my stock ranchos as they should, if those are 100% and the stock ranchos are 0% the Bilsteins are maybe 30% better. Enough that when mine are actually shot (They aren't yet at 35k) I will go with the bilstein but not at the highest level as that makes them a little rougher at certain times. Magnetic ride sure was nice but not sure they would stand up to what I would put them through over time.

Either way just read around, do plenty of research before making decisions and remember to take everything with a grain of salt, there is a ton of bias on the forums with very little time or actual factual knowledge/data behind what some say except they just spent a bunch of money on something so it is the bestest evar! People will proclaim something the best ever after a short period of time (like tires after 1000 miles), not sure how they can decide that with out giving them due time through a variety of situations but that is an example of what people will portray with their rose colored glasses on; so do tons of research and vetting...

My ranchos we’re showing the “sweating” pretty early on. Dealer showed me a tsb from GM stating that until it was 1/2 down the shock body not to replace them. Ended up getting fox shocks sometime after that and the 1/4 leaked ranchos are boxed in my garage.

Dealer replaced both rear shocks today after finding the driver's side was "sweating" too.  We'll see how long these last.  If they fail, I'm going aftermarket, warranty or not.

Does any body know if the dealer would replace my Rancho shock for paint coming off? Not trying to be picky, but a big chunk of paint came off looks horrible. Is this something that would be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty?

Covered under the same DIY warranty along with rust spots on the spare tire rim.

Even if a dealer was foolish enough to replace one just for cosmetics, shocks/bushings should be replaced in pairs so you'd end up with pretty looking mismatched shocks.

Been there, done that. The answer was no. I brought the truck in claiming the shocks were bad due to poor ride quality. Of course they did the old test where you jump up and down on the bumper and they said there was nothing wrong with them.  I did however pick up a pair of new rear  take offs on ebay for #50.00. At 35k I was surprised to find that both shocks were actually bad. Both had about 3" of free travel at the top.

That takes black paint.

I have been researching shocks to go on my truck. I agree with the bias statement, haha! I have had great success and nice ride quality in using Bilstein a in 1500 and 2500 trucks. I have heard lately conflicting reviews of the Fox shocks(non coilovers) having stiff and harsh ride quality.

I added a 4.5 inch Zone lift to mine and I am running the Zone spacer up front with the Ranchos and the Zone Niteos out back, and the ride is comparable to pre lift ride(E rated tires are stiffer). I am thinking of upgrading shocks at some point but my truck only has 3,000 miles on it now.
