I've read several places that fluid film strips away the factory wax coating, which appears to be what has happened in your case. I've seen a quite a few posts here and on silveradosierra forums where guys have had the same thing happen.

Yeah, I'm guessing that's what did it in. It's a truck from Canada, and it appears to have been sprayed heavily with Krown in the past. Figured all the wax will be gone in a few years, may do a more permanent fix then.

I had my truck undercoated with Krown cause the dealer said it was safe for the frame wax lol

I bought 5 gallons of this and covered the entire underside of my 15. http://www.cosmolinedirect.com/cosmoline-rust-veto-342-industrial-grade/

I used the wax undercoating, cheap harbor freight gun and a hot plate to help get the stuff thin enough to spray. Don't get it too hot or it will release the wax that is on the truck. It's going on it's second winter with no issues or factory wax coming loose. I used a 20x30 tarp in my driveway and put the truck up on 6 ton stands with the wheels and wheel-well liners removed. Power wash the truck underneath first, let dry overnight and then start coating it. IT STINKS!! for about a week, but then the frame has a nice thick somewhat rigid coating that will melt and flow into all the crevasses. I only used a gallon and a half so there is plenty left over for future treating.

Anyone's as bad as my 2014? I just Fluid Film heavily every few months and wash it regularly. Wasn't quite this bad when I bought it this summer.

WOW!!!

You might want to de-grease that frame and coat it with some POR15 or Rust bullet.  Zero protection on there besides the FF!  Fluid film is great, but as others have mentioned it will strip the factory wax.  The frame wax is my #1 thing I hate about my truck.  Can't work on anything without being covered in that crap.

I'll eventually get there, haha. The front half of the frame isn't that bad. Might do something in the next month or so while work is slow.

When I bought my new '17, I hesitantly sprung for the dealer installed undercoating. Normally I wouldn't do this, but they are using a special thick tar-like product that really coats & protects the frame & underbody. (it also came with a warranty that is probably useless....... lol )

I had watched the frame & body on my previous truck get really rusty over the years & don't want to go thru that again.

I also have a undercoating gun & attachments, as well as some undercoating oil. I thoroughly sprayed everything in the fall, including all the spots the dealer missed. I also did inside the doors, rockers, fenders, tailgate, frame(where possible) etc. I will go over it again this spring, as well as in the fall. & repeat annually.

I also try to wash the exterior, underneath and the engine compartment as much as possible during the winter to get any salt residue off the truck. This process also requires a good cleaner that can remove salt & road grime, etc. (see my sig.), as water isn't enough on it's own.

I hate rust!!!
