Painting exhaust, bad idea?

I just pulled the trigger on the TruXP black tip exhaust (rebranded Flowmaster American Thunder). Super happy with the sound, thought it wouldn't be truck enough but it's great.

My truck has a 6" lift and because of that when you get close you can see the pipes. I'm thinking about rattle caning them black with some high temp paint so they are not noticeable and should also help with some rust prevention as the pipes are aluminized steel. I'm curious if anyone has done this and if I'm risking something big. I expect that the pipes may retain (or maybe expel?) a bit more heat since they are black but so long as there aren't any wire's or cables around I can't imagine it's much of an issue.

Feedback welcome.

As an additional aside, I'm trying to figure out what size tips to put on. The tips it came with are black (which I want) but are a dinky 3" size. I'm thinking 5" would be nice but curious to see photos. I've got side exit pipes and have the ever so slightly downturned. (I'll post pics when I get home, currently away on business)

Not sure where you’re located but aluminized doesn’t handle road salt all that well so painting is a really good idea.

Best bet would be to remove the system, paint, reinstall that way you’re getting full coverage.

As mentioned above, painting is 99% prep, 1% actually applying paint. Take your time and focus on the welds.
