E85 use...some questions...

I can't find some of the older threads, so figured I would ask...I know some of you have been running it a lot longer than I have.

Running flex fuel, do you need to run anything like injector cleaner since it is already cleaner burning than gasoline?

If fed a steady diet of flex fuel, will old deposits be cleaned?

If fed a steady diet of flex fuel, is there any reason to change oil sooner because of the added moisture? I have noted the oil is staying "cleaner" for longer periods of time?

And finally, is there any downside to running flex fuel? I know these modern fuel systems are supposedly geared to it, but is there any downside? I burn through about 25 gallons a week. I ask because I read an older thread that indicated it was still giving a problem in the 2017s?

Loss of fuel economy ~vs~  10% alcohol is around 30% LOSS !!

You can see this on a 1/2 ton truck window sticker where they show the 'Cruising range" on a tank of fuel.

Your truck will run hotter as the alcohol has more calories and octane, but less density.

Your truck will consume more fuel to do the same job as regular gasoline.

My engine temperatures are no different.  Use of additives with E85 is not recommended.  It's clean enough, it's like running high octane race gas.  The engine idles smoother, makes more power and it just loves it.  You'll see a difference in the first tank but by the third it'll drive noticeably different/better.

Yes, using E85 results in lower gas mileage but it costs less, figure out how many cents per mile.  Between 93 and E85, the only two fuels I run, there difference is but a few cents in favor of E85 most of the time as prices bounce around.

If E85 did keep the oil cleaner, I'd still change it at 5k miles.  At 7500 the truck has been sluggish for a while.  The only downside is convenience, you have to fill up more often and may have to go out of your way to get it.  When we take long trips, I convert over to 93 for the longer range.  When resetting fuel trims, you need to have an alcohol content of 10% or less; in the GMT900s anyway.

I've been running it for a couple months now, so I see the mileage and drivability changes.

Good to know about the additives, I couldn't really find anything either way.

The reason I ask about the oil is that e85 puts so much more water in the crankcase, as evident by the accumulation in the catch can. Should it be changed more frequently than the OLM, or is getting the oil to 200F enough to keep the extra moisture boiled off?

You will be fine following the OLM.  It is trying to go extended drains that you should be taking a sample and sending it off to make sure all is well.

I have been running E85 in my non flex fuel 02 silverado with no issues and going as high as 10k on oil changes.

I've had no water in my crankcase and do not have a catch can.  Remote starts are used to bring motor up to temperature and try not to make short hops of less than a couple of miles for the most part.  Another month or so the next oil change will be due and will check again for water.

I'm not seeing evidence of water (milkshake oil, goop under fill cap, etc.), but I also typically run 50 miles at a stretch so it gets plenty warm. I do however see a drastic increase in the water in my catch can, probably draining three times as often versus gasoline, same weather conditions.

The oil is staying "cleaner" for a longer period compared to the same interval as gasoline...just an observation, not based on UOA.

Not sure your engine will last a month with no oil in the crankcase.

    • So.  Get this.  On the Chevy regular cab, you can get the factory remote start at the dealer from the accessories catalog.  BUT.  GMC, you can't.   Now...get this...GMC 2 door, you CAN get the power seat.     Go.  Figure.   Anywho.  are you trying to order?  Or locate?  Ordering for 2 door 1/2 tons has been stopped as of April or May?  So you won't be able to order.  You'll have to shop on the ground units or in transit units.     Ordering was stopped because the new trucks are coming.
    • Thank you.  I really appreciate the well wishes.  I'm an engineer in the telecom industry, I know hardly anything about marketing.  Over the years I did some videos for nonprofits and web sites for small businesses and the seed was planted.  Agree with over-buying, I started shooting on an iPhone before I got my first DSLR and tripod.   I'm looking at trucks with potentially 150,000+ miles to keep the cost of entry low while focusing on the client experience and equipment.  Good wireless mics for interviews, the right lenses & lighting to look professional.  But I don't want to be late or break down, the stress of emptying a trailer & securing a rental truck right before a gig would negate any savings from buying a junker.  So anything that leaks water, has extensive rust, or generally unreliable I'd like to avoid.   Does GM/Chevy overbuild these trucks for upfitting?  I talked to a local upfitter, they sometimes tie lights & other 12V into existing circuits, which I always thought was bad.  Which is why I enjoyed the AUX upfit switches on previous trucks (odd they mostly come with off-road or work truck packages).
    • i guess it might be depending on the type of driving. my 2.7 has 120k miles, changed the plugs at 70k and it runs as good as new. i have not used any injector cleaner
    • GM's are stainless and have a fairly robust powder coating, although, still not worth $850 in my opinion. They will hold up a lot better than their cheaper steel aftermarket counterparts.   What I like about the GM step bars is dealers will often equip their dealer stock with them. Lots of margin. Which means a lot of people end up buying them because they're already on the truck, even if they don't like them. So it's pretty easy to find brand new takeoffs with hardware on Marketplace and Craigslist for about $250.   That's what I did for my crew cab. I wanted ZR2 rock rails for the look, but with the ability to bolt up GM's assist step package. From GM it's about a $2500 accessory all in. The old folks in my life can't get in the truck without steps. I found the whole package on marketplace for $180.
    • I am really glad I found this post and this site... We have a 2022 1500 refresh LTZ that has these problems: - forward collision avoidance warning light - lane keep assist unavailable - adaptive cruise control unavailable   The truck was bought as a new leftover in 2023, so it was still under the 3/36 B to B when it went in for these problems earlier this year. It has been at the dealer on and off now for about 110 days now. These are some of the things they have done that I can read on the service tickets. - replace/add ground straps (4) - check all battery cables and vlts - replace serial data gateway module - replace front view camera - numerous reprogramming - a few calibrations (apparently ending with 'learned') Last week when I had it back the truck had those 3 warnings every time we used it except for 3 times. On three separate occasions the truck started and ran perfectly with no (zero) warning messages or warning lights lit - everything worked perfectly. Over that same time period the truck did not work on every other 'key' cycle which I would estimate at 60+ cycles. On those estimated 57 cycles it had the same 3 problems each and every time.   It is back at the dealer now - can anyone help at all with what the true problem might be?  Or possibly what can be ruled out leaving a lower number of possibilities? Thank you very much for any help you may be able to supply....
