2000 Silverado - 4x4, 5.3, Auto

When I let off the gas at slow speeds (20mph, etc) I often get the "clunk" that these trucks are famous for.  I know it has to go with the slip yoke, and greasing the yoke only seems to last for a little while.  My question is - I though I saw a while back where we can purchase a new - improved slip yoke.  Can someone post a link to the part? and provide any other important info  I may need. thanks!

Both U Joint were replaced about 2K miles ago.. never changed anything.  Any other ideas?

Yes, it is a nickel plated slip yoke. Mine was covered under warranty back in 2003 for the clunk.  Might try to get in touch with MS3DALE on here and see if he can hook you up with one, if they are still available.

Just replaced with nickel plated slip yoke - still have the clunk.  only when letting off gas at low speed around 20-15 mph. Seems like the 3-2 downshift.  If I put the truck in neutral.. it doesn't clunk at all when breaking at low speeds.  Also installed new U Joints front and rear. .

Any other ideas?

You will find plenty of play in the rear axle, but the drive shaft should be "0" play. I assume that you are not using "4x4 auto" mode, correct? It should ALWAYS be in 2x4 mode and not "auto" unless you are in show or mud.

There is a TSB stating this is normal and no repair is necessary.

That said, options/ideas:
- the computer controls the timing of the release of the 3-4 clutches and apply of the 2-4 band based on throttle position, speed etc. If you have/had problems with related sensors, repair and see if the computer resets
- of e a new problem, then 3-2 valve spring or solenoid may be going bad.
