Good deal? Or not...on '18 w/6.6L

Hello all. Checking to see if this is a good deal.

I am in the market for a truck. Wife wants to upgrade travel trailers and her Armada cannot tow what we want. So that means I get a truck. I have NEVER owned a truck, but am a heavy equipment operator, so I have experience with them. I have always been an import sports car guy, currently have a BMW 435i. It will be traded in. I have ZERO brand loyalty and have never owned an American vehicle (shame on me). I have test driven the Nissan Titan XD (diesel), Ford F250 Super Duty (Diesel), and a 2500HD SLT (diesel). The Titan is only considered due to cost, but it is down on power (in comparison), down on capability (only slightly), WAY DOWN on technology and gadgetry. I like the looks of the GMC the most, but the interior of the Ford better. But I am leaning toward the GMC.

So, I went into the dealer and before test driving told him I could not afford $70K (price on the sticker). Told him it needed to be in the $50s, or I was not going to waste time test driving. He pulled up the info on 3 on the lot and wrote down $59,000 (plus Tax, Tag, Title). He gave me a printout with MSRP and Invoice costs. So here are the specs with code, short description and MSRP and INVOICE.

That is a nicely equipped truck for towing a trailer - I checked and the trailering mirrors are part of the DMax Plus Pkg - which is a great deal for Crew Cab trucks. My 2500 Chevy Double cab is an LTZ (sim to SLT) with the convenience package, heated, cooled seats etc. I got mine with employee pricing for around 60K w/o trade - so I can see where the dealer could get it to 59,000 with a decent trade where they can re-coop any losses on the deal.

Other than that - there is no real incentive for them to give away a truck - there will not be a new HD till late 2019 or early 2020.

The trade is where I think we will have negotiating. We haven’t discussed it yet, I want the the two to be separate discussions. I have seen people claim they got a car for crazy cheap, just to find out they were killed on the trade.

If that $59K is the best I am going to get, I am considering not negotiating it. And saying if I can get what I want for trade we have a deal. The $59K was his price without us even going back and forth. It was the first number he presented, so I know it is not actual bottom price they would take.

I'd check on trade value, then go from there. Do homework on what your trade is worth and selling for. $59K for a well equipped diesel seems decent, and I'm sure you can at least say $59K OTD and get it if it was his first offer. Good luck!

Friend purchased a 2018 Sierra Denali HD Duramax 4x4, Z-71, Sunroof, White Frost Paint, for $62,500 +TTL at the end of April. Seems the deals are a little better now.   Look what comparable trucks are selling for at Laura GMC so you have an idea how much wiggle room you have. Research value of your Bimmer.  My experience is they will initially offer rough NADA value and negotiate from there.

You can do better than 59k, there are lots of incentives out there.

The GMC interior will grow on you they are comfy.

I told them they need to either get up to NADA trade in good value and $59K or come down on the $59K, they haven’t budged. And I am a serious buyer, but I need them to work with me. I test drove the F250s and they are working on pricing much more aggressively. They have come down on their numbers. GMC have a number and didn’t budge, and hasn’t called back.

or try another gm dealership, or see what you have out there for interested buyers in the bmw you can get more selling outright

All through the year, as the new models are getting closer to being on the lots, dealerships WILL be just about giving them away. When the new trucks are on the lots, the old trucks will be heavily discounted to make room for the new trucks. Just saying...

I would try the GMC Laura dealer. In St. Louis

You do not want the FORD 6.7 but thats IMHO feeling. The duramax -allison combo is the best out there.

You are nearly $5K under dealer invoice on the first offer and you don't think they are being aggressive on the first offer?  If you indicated that you would be trading before they came up with that price, don't expect them to move much.  Lucky for you if that the number is not contingent on the trade.

Well I went and re test drove the Ford F250. While I am not huge on the exterior, the interior on the Ford and the way it drove was just nicer than the GMC. So I picked up a new F250 SuperDuty with the 6.7 Power Stroke in it. Can't wait to go camping next week and do some towing.

Thank you all, sorry I went a different route, but thank you for the help.

Good luck and happy camping!

I too was considering an F250 (gasser). I dunno - I just love my Chevy's so I couldn't do it. Still - Ford has some nice trucks!

How big a trailer?  How often you going to tow?  To me a nice 1500 with Max Tow package and 6.2 would do what you need at a lesser cost.  Just saying.  They seem to be giving better offers on the 1500s now from what I have read on here.
