Hello,

This is more a report on how what and were thread than asking for help thread. Kinda out to see if others are seeing these issues.

2017 Sierra 4X4 5.3L engine.

Eng light #1.  Mileage 17532  16 June 2018

Location: Phoenix AZ  Outside Temp 80 degrees F

First start of the day Light came on.

Dealer replaced #2 fuel injector

Dealer said they have had a rash of injectors going bad in allot of vehicles. So many in fact that GM can't keep up with demand and wait for parts are 4 days. I waited 4 days to get mine and once they had the part it worked fine till today.

Eng light #2.  Mileage 17675  30 June 2018

Location: Phoenix AZ  Outside Temp 87 degrees F

First start of the day Light came on. This time I had started the truck with the remote. It shut it's self off after about 15 seconds.

I have an appointment with the Dealer Monday.

Oh and for the record, this is the first vehicle I have ever owned that had a Check engine light come on. I have owned probably 20ish cars or trucks in my 52 years. Just found that to be interesting that I have gone this long before seeing one.

I’ll ask tomorrow when I take it in for the second engine light.

Most likely a P050D and P0300.

We have replaced a ton of these injectors since the LTx engines came out.  GM use to say if one injector was bad, then replace all 4 on the bank.  They changed their policy a few weeks ago to only the infected injector.  I bet if they did the whole bank like we used to your light wouldn't have came back on

If it is those codes, I would ask about pip5498 and make sure they are checking for coolant leaks. That is what was causing the error codes on mine. Tech said that it can occur at any point in the warranty period. How is your coolant level? If it is down at all, I would suspect that you have that issue.

You have been lucky.  You are fortunate to have this fulfilling life experience on a vehicle covered by warranty.  My experience with this dreaded light came a couple of times during my University years when it would inevitably mean returning to public transit!

I now this post is from a few months ago, but hoping you see this. I'm fearful this may be what's going on with my truck (I've replaced all injectors and a ton of other stuff - still getting rough cold start). What happened with yours?

How many miles do you have? May need to have your valves cleaned.

Knock on wood, 10k miles later and it has fixed the issue.

Sorry, I meant more specifically what work they actually performed. Did they replace one cylinder head or both? Did you get all new valves, etc. with the new head(s)? What is leaving me scratch my head is that I do not see any coolant leaking from the head bolts and my oil is not milky (I change it). I am not noticing any significant usage of coolant in the reservoir either, maybe a little loss but it's very minimal.

77k, I cleaned the intake valves but am taking it in Monday to have the exhaust valves tested for leaks. We'll see...

They replaced the driver's side head and injectors. My oil was also not milky and the coolant usage was minimal. It is a pin hole leak. It basically is seeping a few drops of coolant in when it is sitting that gets burnt off at startup. It is very minimal, but enough to cause a rough cold start and kill an injector.

Thanks. My gut's telling me that's the case for me, but hoping I'm wrong. When I read the conditions for PIP5498 my stomach sank because it perfectly described what's going on with mine. I've pretty much replaced everything but the head to fix this thing. Finally gave in and have an appointment for Monday at a dealer nearby. They'll do the dye test as well as check cylinder pressure for valve leaks and let me know what they find.

It should be covered under your power train warranty if is the issue.

I've got a 2016 so it's a 3 year/60k mile powertrain warranty, I'm at 77k miles. I wouldn't have done all this work myself if it was still under warranty. Fortunately, I've got a dealer near me with a really good service advisor who's going to bat for me with GM. He's confident I'll get some help from them, just not 100% payment.

I called the dealer I bought the truck from seeing if they can help at all, and I got the cold shoulder. It amazes me how they butter you up when you're interested to buy, then you're dead to them when you're out of warranty. I was courteous and did not demand that they pay for my repairs (I know I'm out of warranty), just looking for any help whatsoever since I'm not too far out of it and the fact that I just gave them $39k less than a year ago. Nope, nothing they are willing to do. I know that's not the case for all dealers though. Fortunately, I found this other dealer who actually cares about their customers and wants to build a lasting relationship. The dealer I bought from told me I would be paying $165/hour to diagnose and I'd have to pay $30/day for the loaner car they'd be giving me. The advisor at this new dealer told me I'd have the loaner for free and diagnosis is a flat $75. This advisor knows what he's doing by taking care of me now, eventually I'll be getting a new vehicle between me or my fiancee and guess who I'll give the first shot to, this new dealer. Same goes for any future service that I don't want to do myself.

Understood. I was thinking that the mileages in the op we yours. It amazes me how few dealerships recognize the importance of service departments in making future sales. I think the issue is that there is so much turnover in both the same departments and dealership ownership that they most likely won't be around when it is time for you to buy another truck. The dealership that I bought both my truck from has a new service department, new ownership, new managers and new sales people within 6 months of buying.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
