rebuild or replace

I have a 2006 sierra that has 162,000 miles on it that recently started to Knock and make a metal on metal sound when running and would worsen with higher RPM we figured it was a bearing issue and decided to go ahead and pull the motor out. I think it may be a bearing issue but I am not sure yet, but if it turns out to be a bad bearing should I replace the bearings and go ahead and have block and heads machined and have new valves,pistons, rods etc. put in or just buy re manufactured long block? I want the job to be done right but don't want to spend more money than i have too. Any opinions on what my next step/steps should be will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have to decide what's best for you.

What shape is the rest of this truck in?

Has trans been serviced regularly or is it going to be the next issue? With that many miles and depending on how it was used and serviced is to be considered.

As for the motor, you have a lot of options.

The cheapest would be to rebuild the motor I think.

The other option is a crate motor from your local dealer. Probably a better warranty. More money though.

My problem with reman motors is getting a warranty issue fixed.

Whether you rebuild or replace with a long block depends a lot on whether you have a competent machine shop handy. In addition to the things you mentioned if you have one or more bearings going bad you may have to have the crankshaft turned also. You might want to wait to base your decision until you have the motor torn down to see what needs done, that way you will have a laundry list to take to a machine shop to get an estimate and get a feel for their competency. If you're worried about the core charge on your motor and don't want to completely tear it down, at the very least flip it on an engine stand, pull the oil pan and inspect the bearings.

I'd find a reasonable low mileage engine from a salvage yard.  That is if you want to keep the truck and the rest of it is in great shape.
