I don't buy that 100 k break in for a diesel.
The first few thousand miles will do the most break in on any motor IMO.
Then by 5 to 10 k miles the bearings etc. have worn in IMO.

Just saying it is the old school of thought, diesels outlast gas engines in general. I know my tractors that have 12,000+ hours on them still run as well as they did when they were new. Everyone has their own opinion. And yes, DEF sucks. We have to use in on our large tractors and it’s a mess.... I can totally live without that crap, thanks EPA....

Wow, I guess I should have gotten a d-max......  My 12-13 mpg on the 6.0 is pretty depressing right now :sigh: :sigh:.

That mileage seems nice....but I'll take my thirsty 6.0 any day. It has enough power for me, it's arguably one of the most reliable gas engines ever made, there's no DEF or regeneration stuff to worry about, it runs just fine on cheap 87 octane gas....and I've got about $10k more in my pocket.

Sorry to the OP. That 700 mile range is pretty cool.

That range is awesome! My 6.0 has 36 gallons and I am lucky to see 500 miles IF I am taking a trip. Much less just around town.

Babying my 6.0l on strictly highway, I regularly fill up at the 500 mile marker with some miles left.  My last fill up was 17.3mpg 90% highway, best was 18.2 out west.  Avg combine is 15.5ish.  Still satisfied here.

All this talk about mileage makes me thirsty...time for a beer.

Good talk - but none of us bought HD's for their fuel mileage :D

I just filled up my Duramax for 2.79 a gallon at the Speedway in Birmingham Mich..   woohoo

BTW I stay away from the small podunk stations, I want clean fuel....

Just an FYI but Fuelly.com is the easiest way to keep track of mileage.  The best I have gotten is 802 miles to a tank.  The only bad thing about fuelly is that you get to see how much money you spend over time.  Like since I joined fuelly in November of 2012 I spent $10K on fuel in my 2002 Silverado.

Oh the 802 miles to the tank was in my 2014 diesel Cruze.  :)

$ 2 a gallon gas, $ 3.00 for diesel in michigan. Takes a long time to make up the difference.

Your diesel really breaks in about 5000 miles. Ive gotten 23mpg on the highway easy.

$2.39 & - 3 cents for using Walmart gift card....  but look at the gas price!!!

I am fortunate that E85 is pretty low near me and that the 6.0 works well on it.  My 2500 6.0 has been on E85 exclusively for almost two years.

E85 is going for $1.12 in my area.  My 2500 averages about 10 mpg on the stuff for a whopping 11 cents a mile fuel cost.

Diesel is going for $2.80 in my area.  For a Dmax 2500 to just break even on that 11 cents per mile fuel cost, it would have to average for all miles about 25-26 mpg.  Not going to happen.  Maybe highway with a tail wind, but not a average for all city, highway, towing, hauling, etc miles.   If one was getting anything close to 25 mpg, a 36 gallon tank would go for 900 miles.

So, by having the 6.0 I not only save a grip of cash at the front end, my operational costs are substantially lower as well.  And even if I had to replace the 6.0, I could do it twice before getting close to the costs incurred with the Dmax.

If one has a definitive need for the Dmax, then go for it. I haven't come across a situation yet that I need the Dmax.  And boy I am glad I don't.  I'll just mess with diesel in my commercial trucks.
