General Motors Has a President Named Reuss Again

Mark Reuss has been named the President of General Motors Corporation. We are big fans of Mr. Reuss here at GM-Trucks.com. Over the past number of years, we have had the distinct pleasure of spending time with him on and off the record and have shared a few meals and even a racetrack with him on one occasion. Among the automotive media, Mr. Reuss is respected not only for his many accomplishments in the corporate world, but also because he is approachable, likable, and a true "car guy."

 

This new promotion elevates Mark Reuss from his prior positions at GM's Global Product Group and head of Cadillac. Among his new responsibilities will be leading the Quality organization at GM. Reuss took over Cadillac after its failed move to New York and following its sales declines during the tenure of former brand executive Johan de Nysschen. 

 

“Mark’s global operational experience, deep product knowledge and strong leadership will serve us well as we continue to strengthen our current business, take advantage of growth opportunities and further define the future of personal mobility,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “Mark has played a critical role in leading the development of the company’s award-winning vehicles while transitioning his team to prepare for growing electrification and autonomous technologies.”

 

As our headline hints, Mark is not the first of the Reuss family to be the President of GM. His father held the job during the early 1990s after Stepmel and before Smith. During Lloyd Reuss' tenure, GM closed 21 plants and put 74,000 employees out of work. These were the "worst of times" prior to the 2007 bankruptcy. On the day his dad was fired from GM, Mark Reuss had a tux hanging in his car for the event honoring his dad's 35 years of service to GM scheduled for that evening. Hopefully, Mark Reuss's time as President will be looked back on by history as much more positive.

 

“I am very proud to have spent my entire career at General Motors, and to now take on this new role is truly a great honor. With our current lineup of outstanding cars, trucks and crossovers around the world, I’m looking forward to keeping our momentum going at full speed.” GM issued a statement today that said that Reuss plans to "...double the resources allocated to electric and autonomous vehicle programs in the next two years."

Now if "the car guy" Mark Reuss can just go on to take Mary Barra's job as Chairman of GM and replace all of Barra's "special" yes-maam VP's with real car people, there might actually be a modicum of hope for the future. 

 

The downside is that floundering Cadillac, who isn't even sure what town it is located in anymore, desperately needed his undivided attention, and now that will not happen. 

 

The General is spending way too much time and $ on electrified robot cars, mid-engined Corvettes, and other automotive unicorns, in a race for the global market that may or may not exist, with the heady idea that if they build it, we will all come running. 

 

But the expert reviews on their latest new real-world products such as the new Silverado 1500 ("a $70,000 kick in the nuts compared to the competition", "GM engineers phoned it in and went home early" and "designed by separate uncommunicative committees") are painfully bearing out that they'd be better served by concentrating on their existing customer's wants and needs!

      GM’s Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Mark Reuss, had the unfortunate and embarrassing experience of crashing a pace car this weekend at the Detroit Grand Prix Indycar event. Reuss lost control of the Corvette ZR1 in a corner with uneven pavement. The vehicle appeared to oversteer and corrections sent Reuss into the wall nose first. Thankfully, Reuss and a track official in the passenger seat were uninjured. 

      Members of GM-Trucks.com staff have met Mark Reuss on multiple occasions and have shared racetracks with him. Mr. Reuss is “guy’s-guy” who is very easy to speak to. We’ve had the pleasure of sharing meals with him and informally discussing a wide range of topics. Mr. Reuss has also granted Zane Merva of GM-Trucks.com formal interviews to give updates on truck developments. At the track events we visited, Reuss took advantage of media days to get to know and hear from members of the media during important Chevrolet and Cadillac performance model launches. He also took advantage of the open track to turn hot laps in the products he helped bring to market. His competency behind the wheel of 700 hp + cars is not in question. Mr. Reuss also knows this particular track, having driven it on many occasions before this event.
       
      GM issued this statement on the accident: “We are thankful that there were no serious injuries. Both the pace car driver and the series official were taken to the infield care center, where they were checked, cleared and released. It is unfortunate that this incident happened. Many factors contributed, including weather and track conditions. The car’s safety systems performed as expected.”
       
      Mr. Reuss posted a comment to his personal Facebook page thanking friends, family, and GM fans for their support.  Since the post was not public, but only shown to his FB friends, we have opted not to reproduce it in its entirety as other media have chosen to do. Reuss apologizes in the post, and thanks his well-wishers, but says he let people down. We don’t feel let down. If a pace car isn’t a real track car, and if it isn’t going to be driven hard, then what’s the point?

      Edmunds.com recently asked GM's Global VP of Product Development, Mark Reuss, if he thought Chevy should take on the new Ford F-150 Raptor. Reuss replied that capital was limited, and that was not a priority. We all know that in business-speak that means "Nope ain't gonna happen." The interesting part of the exchange came next. Asked about the Chevy Colorado ZR2, Reuss replied "We showed the ZR2 and said we would like to do that." One might take from that Reuss meant "Heck-yeah!"
       
      Draw your own conclusions about the Edmunds interview. However, it may be good to keep in mind that GM has just trademarked the name "Badlands."
