Buying a 2010 z71 REAR TIRES CHIRP/BIND IN 4WHEEL DRIVE WHEN TURNING

Looking to buy this truck, I have to give him an answer tomarrow. 2010 Silverado z71, 205k+ miles. It's nice though everything works but the drivers side window switch, which he says he'll replace. On the test drive I was actually starting to think about giving an offer and taking it as is and fixing the switch myself. Pulled into a parking lot and engaged the 4wheel drive, felt it engage, took off and went to make a turn. Well when I did the rear end felt as of it were binding up and making the inside tire cherp.....that was in 4wheel high, kept it in 4wheel high and went down the road at about 35mph into a turn and it felt fine...... switched it back to 2wheel drive and all was fine.....I looked on the internet first but didn't really find a answer. Has any one else experienced this?.....

You should only engage 4x4 on a loose surface such as mud, sand, snow etc. That binding is completely normal and not good at all for your diffs! or transfer case.  Binding occurs because your diff is locked and your outside wheel will need to make more rotations than your inner during a turn.

That's sounds pretty typical for a properly locked 4WD system.  When turning, your front tires/rear tires (as well as side to side) will rotate at different rates.  When you engage 4wd, the system is physically locked, forcing the tires to turn at the same rate, even when they don't want to.  Thus, the system binds when you are trying to turn very sharply.

This is why 4wd hi should only be used when you are on a slippery surface and the tires don't have enough traction to bind up the system.

Ok guys thanks alot!... Makes me feel better knowing this might be a common thing....when I went back to him, I told him about the rear end and we went in behind his shop in gravel/dirt and tried it and it done the same thing but not as bad as on the pavement...he called the previous owner and asked him about it, so I really belive he was unaware of it.....but like I said 2wheel drive 70mph, crusin......!

This would be my first 4wheel dig, I'm not a mudder, I'm coming from the land of drop spindles and c notches!....$9500 is the asking price......

I would have been worried if the truck didn't do that in 4wd!  Vehicles with selectable rear lockers (F150's), will do that as well in 2wd.

Yeah, it's going to need to be steam cleaned to get the frame clean...(I got a detailing buddy ready to get ahold of it for me.  ??)...engine and bay is clean also. Interior is clean and in good shape...took the pawpaw mudflaps off.....detail Buddy's going to take the pinstripe and Z71 stickers off for me. Thinking about a white grill, and some irocs 6's, and leveled in the rear.  ..

I'll be using this truck to pull my gutter machine, haul trash to the dump, 4wheeler in the back, brush/limbs, d/d (60mile round trip for work )

Use of 4HI or 4LO and 4HI Lock or 4LO Lock on 4WD vehicles  is intended for use on a low traction surface such as snow, ice, mud or sand. On a low traction surface, the differences in front and rear axle speeds will not have as much effect on binding because of the lower traction levels between the surface and the contact patch of the tires. On a high traction surface, the higher traction levels will create more binding and noise in the drive-line.
