No more AWD?

I miss the AWD in my last truck ('07 Escalade EXT) and would appreciate it even more in this truck.  My EXT (and Avalanche prior to that, which had the same setup as our current trucks) have more weight in the back, so wheel spin isn't as big of an issue.  In my '18, I have hit traction control, chirped tires, etc. not even getting on it that hard, especially in the wet.

 

I know/understand how the auto feature works.  It makes more noise and you can always tell when it is/is not engaging.  I use it when needed, but it just isn't as nice as the AWD.  The ONLY advantages the current 4WD setup has over the AWD system is fuel mileage and the low range in the transfer case.  My truck is for towing/hauling/long trips, so low range has zero use for me.  Fuel mileage, well that is always nice, but I am better it isn't that big of a difference between 2WD and the AWD system.

Even on ROWs when I had a Z71 I would usually only use auto 4WD. I would encounter tricky terrain daily. The only time I used low range was on very hilly terrain when ruts could be a problem. The auto feature was great on wet pavement.

What transfer case does the k2 use?  I'd be interested in knowing more about how it's different over previous gens. 

 

Like said, GM calls the auto mode in these AWD.  I've heard both auto and 4hi use clutches for engagement/ locking.  I can say true AWD vehicles like my old TBSS drive smoother than my truck in auto on dry pavement.  But this drives better in auto on dry pavement than any of my old GMT800s. I never had a 900.  

 

As a side note, I don't use auto on dry pavement but I have forgotten it was in auto and it takes a lot longer to realize it on my 2018.
