Another CAI question

How would a CAI improve your throttle response? There are only three things an intake "could" do and many don't:

- Reduce the restriction of flow

- Lower IAT's by either insulating the charge pipe from engine heat or pulling from air more directly from outside the engine bay where it is cooler, resulting in more dense air

- If a ram air setup, possibly forcing air into the motor at speed (which would also help the above).  There are very few true ram air setup out there and few are actually effective.

If you look at the CAI's for these trucks, none are insulated or pulling air from a different source. At best they are providing a less restricted path.  This may improve WOT power but throttle response is controlled by the ECU.

Think of a truck carrying a load of 1000 lbs. vs a truck carrying a load of 200 lbs. Which one would feel like it moves/accelerates faster, feeling lighter and having perception of a better throttle response?

And please explain how a CAI would do any of this. Not bullshit seat of the pants crap, but an actual improvement of HP/TQ when not it WOT situations.

ECU monitors airflow and adjusts fueling accordingly. Only at or near WOT, where the intake could be a restriction, would a benefit be seen. Anything else is in your head to justify the purchase.

Glad you asked!

The truck now weighs less because your wallet size has decreased in weight because you just blew all this cash on a CAI...so it's more responsive on an infinitesimal scale.

I have one...but I know it doesn't do much if anything at all for a stock motor, no tuning, etc. I like the sound it makes when I accelerate hard, which is like 2x per 300 miles because that is how I like to drive. Do I feel like I wasted my money? totally!

Les restriction makes a difference, been proven over the years over many platforms. Don't understand why you guys argue about it. Now Silverado/sierra aftermarket intake design that is a different argument, most designs don't work very well. That said the well engineered ones work. Just most trucks will need a tune to maximize.

I would fix the inner lip on the throttle body first. Also dump the factory cat back.  Open intake/open exhaust with tuning is the basic foundation of engine modification, that is sound practice not some kind of snake oil. You choose lame products that don't work or don't do all the mods needed to get a noticeable result it's your fault. These trucks wake up with the right mods. Just throw on  K&N filter and a flowmaster - ah no. Takes more than that.

I always upgrade to chrome valve covers first. They're always good for another 5 hp. :smash:

Well at this point I have:

  • Made straight pipe from the CAT's back.  No restrictions, no muffler or resonator.
  • K&N high flow air filter(minimal oil applied so as not to mess up MAF)
  • Airaid MIT
  • SuperChips Flashpaq F5 with 91 octane Performance map, trans optimizations, 20% throttle sensitivity added

I am not that far from Vengeance Racing... I could always book some dyno time to see how the power curve and AFR is doing, and have them custom tune it if needed...

Put a truck with no CAI on a dyno then install a CAI on same truck and run it on same dyno and the run with the CAI will show more hp/tq guaranteed. Doesn’t matter if it’s not enough to feel, all that matters is there is an improvement.  Combine that with a tuner and a less restricted exhaust  and it will definitely make more power then if you just tuned a stock truck with own intake and exhaust.

That's awesome you live so close to Vengeance. I live in Social Circle, GA. They are doing my Whipple Supercharger on March 18th (made the appointment in December and that was the earliest available.) They are one of the best performance shops in the US.

Yeah, they are like 20-25 minutes from here.

Love your bike pic. I had a 2015 Duc 1299 Panigale. They sure have refined them since then. Do you do any track days in Braselton?

Yeah, done several and I am signed up for another track day on May 4...  Not sure if I will take the Panigale or the Aprilia...  The Ape is faster and has better electronics, but the Ducati is better aero and more set up for track riding... probably less work too...

I did a couple N2 track days there last year. Thinking about signing up for the one they have on 06/06. I already have track plastics on my S1000RR and Metzeler Racetecs RR and will probably keep them on till then. Sorry to derail your post. Good luck to you and nice bikes.

No worries on off topic stuff, it's all good.

I don't bother with race plastics, I just take my streetbikes to the track once a year, maybe twice.

2017 1500 LTZ Z71 Silverado.

I ran mine a month so I could learn it's base lines and let the ECM learn my driving habits.

12/19 city/hwy mpg (pre-mod)

Installed K&N CAI and AirRaid throttle body spacer after 30days.

16.4/22 city/hwy mpg (post-mod)

Sure, a lil growl under the hood came out, always fun, but the fuel costs savings will pay for itself after 10k miles.

I'm thrilled.
