HELP! Need opinions on purchase of truck!

Gents,

I purchased a 2016 Duramax GMC 2500. Absolutions love the Truck but on the way home I realized it has an EFI Live tuner and FASS Lift Pump. This voids the warranty that’s left. The 3 yr 36k is up in August and the 5 yr 100k is August of 2021. None of the emissions equipment has been messed with. I took it to the local diesel performance shop and they said everything is fine and I just need to drive it. There’s a light emission friendly tune in the truck and foresees no issues with it. The truck has 23k miles on it and looks well taken care of.

The dealer said they’d take it back if I don’t want it. I’m torn between what to do.

Opinions please!?!

Thanks!

Sully

The dealer knew it had a tuner on it and still sold it to you???  That’s weird. They’re even offering to take the truck back???  That’s weird to.

Was the purchase from a GM dealership? If so I would have them put it in writing that they will honor your warranty coverage. If it was an independent dealer/lot that just turns cars I would be curious about them offering to take the truck back. As Jacoby said, it is weird. Since it already has the tune, there is not much you can do if it causes you problems and GM denies you coverage. Kinda like a tattoo...it's there and you can't really hide it now.

How did you discover the tune after purchase?  Did the dealer confirm your warranty is void?  Are they willing to take it back because they mislead you?  If this was a GM dealer will they give you a certified pre-owned type 1 year warranty?  It sounds like you've done your research and need to do what makes you feel comfortable.  Reading other threads on this forum will make you believe that a tune is a good thing!  I too would be leery and most likely would not purchase a tuned used truck.

If its a gm dealer make them give you an extended and have them put in writing that they know there was a tune previously installed.

You have to make this decision.

I will add this.

I believe you will get 75 K - 100 K miles out of that drive train if properly maintained before it may need some work.

The most common repair would be the fuel system, injection pump and injectors I believe.

I know someone who has a 2011 Duramx and just over 100 K had to have the fuel system rebuilt, $ 8 K at a dealer.

This truck was used to tow heavy loads some times and pull a 12 K pound 5th wheel.

Duramax owners should comment.

The lift pump is regarded as a benefit to the cp4.  I would wonder if a different tune was in there prior, as an emission-friendly tune would not require a lift pump.

Take it back and go buy a new one. Why do you buy a used one to start with? Every GMC/Chevy lot around here is plum full of brand new crew 4x4 diesels that are seriously discounted to move and still aren’t.

Who says the warranty is “void”? Plenty of dealers will do warranty work on modded trucks just as plenty will not. The real problem is when corporate gets involved and requires pictures and or downloads of ecm for major repairs.

Sounds like the last owner wasn’t rolling coal, pulling a sled, or drag racing it on the weekends since most guys would rip off the DEF stuff first so I doubt it was “beat on” especially since you didn’t notice anything “fishy” when you looked at / test drove it.
