Brake upgrades

Thank you for the info. I've been eyeing the slotted 16's in black or even unfinished. The red would be too noticeable to the CFO, same reason i order all my surfboards in white!
They offer custom powder coated colors. I wanted to match my truck. Then you can get the letters on the caliper filled a 2nd custom color. Would look killer.

We have ran the hawks and the others as well as performance rotors and the end result is always the same all are crap.
We weight them and heat them up and it is a trade of in higher heat, better braking, and dust. In there you also get fade.
The answer is simple bigger brakes. There a dozens of good articles out on the pros and cons. But the answer is easy. Larger rotor equals less heat and fade more surface and with added pistons and pad surface your good to go. Then you also get options on pad type and they are easier to change.
Gm knows this and offers the big brake kit. But for the money nothing beats the Wilwood kit. I have seen it for as low as $1500. It will last 2 or 3 times longer then of the shelf seap out parts and no one can begin to compare it to the police package that's a joke.
I understand it is twice the price of everything others are saying but it is 10 times the brakes.
I have them on 2 of my race cars and the truck will get a set next.

Yeah that's a totally different comparison. My point is the improvement you get for $300 or so is pretty good if you select the best components.  No the police package isn't some magical set up, just good heavy duty rotors for a reasonable price. No you will not get comparable performance out of an pad/rotor upgrade vs. aftermarket system. Just in reality those systems GM, Baer, Wilwood, are going to be close to $2k if you find a deal and Baer if you go big is closer to $3500. (they have a couple set ups).

OP did not state the budget. So yeah a 16" 6 piston set up would be best and light years ahead of a upgraded stock set up. but costs x-times more for that improvement. I agree wilwood is the best value of the BBK's. Aftermarket brakes are never a waste of money IMHO. As long as you accept that they may have an increase maintenance schedule over stock and may require better fluid/bleeding and bedding procedures to work up to par.

And yes, any OEM based set up will eventually overheat depending on use, no matter what combination you use , just sayin you can get higher limits than stock with just pads/rotors/fluid.

I agree with everything you said. My girlfriend goes through a brand new brake change in a years time. Made it year and a half on the Brembo in the regal gs. I'm not bad yet. But I also haven't pulled with it yet and dont roll race.
Ever seen a turbo car roll race and spool the turbo with the brakes? Wow glow red and sparks. Wild stuff.
Worst on any setup is high speeds then braking...but when you stop and the rotor is hot but the pads cool only that spot. All the Camaro and firebird had warped rotors in first 10k miles. We swapped to wilwood sl6 kits then issue was the tires and grip.

yeah < I have a couple of F-body's where I've been through the gamit of pads/rotors/lines/fluids to bite the bullet and go with aftermarket in my case baer. Have some brackets to run FSL Wilwoods that I haven't used yet. But anytime you go fast brakes gotta be high on the list of mods right there with the engine. out of the aftermarket people don't realize how wildwood really doesn't give up too much of anything vs the others (Baer,AP,etc) especially if you choose the calipers you need and piece a set up together vs a kit (a lot of choices/full race options). Those Sl6's  are really nice for the money. btw.

I'm in the same boat as OP, almost done the second set of pads & discs after 96,000kms. Rarely tow much, occasional hauling weight, live in a hilly area & drive in a spirited fashion.

Can't afford to dump big bucks into a big brake kit but I do know from competition cars experience there is a big difference with the right pads & discs.

Tested various EBC pads on my first rally car as my co-driver was a dealer for them, most entertaining was pre production red stuff pads, didn't fade once but only lasted one day (80 miles) & threw sparks everywhere which was very entertaining for the service crew at night [emoji16]

Sounds like Hawk could be my next set, I see several compounds. Anyone have experience with what works on the road (from cold).

I would look at the severe duty/heavy duty hawks - with the knowledge that they are for heavier tires/towing/etc.. supposed to have great cold bite. If you do not do those things the HPS is probably OK  though they are not the latest compound.
