No thanks. There would be no way to know if you actually got it clean.  20 micron particles are pretty hard to see.  Besides, $250 will buy me 15+ of the most expensive disposable filters on the market that probably flow and filter just as well or better.  At 5000 mile OCI each, that's 75,000+ miles.  At 7500 mile OCI, it's over 112,000 miles. The math just doesn't add up for me.

These filters have been out for awhile now, Personally i do not trust this style of filter. Just like @Mike GMC i can by 15+ of disposable filters and have peace of mind on my motor. @garagerog I believe that K&N states it on their website, and from what i remember it not great.

Bad as the gimmick in the 90’s when the military was using rolls of toilet paper and Bounty paper towels in canisters on their vehicles for oil and hydraulic filters.

 

Somebody made money off it.  Sure they ran. For awhile.

I run the K & P stainless cleanable as the first pass. 30 micron absolute. AMSOIL bypass filter as the secondary. 98.7% absolute efficiency at that 2 micron. By the time it's done the oil is cleaner than when it was in the bottle.

Personally I don't trust K&N for anything, their better flow air filters comes because they don't filter as well, and that scares the heck out of me when it comes to an oil filter. I'll pass.

·        Lifetime (steel mesh) oil filters are not cost effective and there is no data that shows effectiveness.  Does not compare to any other filters, really any better, questionable.  Instead of throwing away a disposable oil filter you now have to dispose of cleaning solvent.  Also, if the oil gets changed somewhere is it likely will get throw away.

I’ve used lifetime filters in the air box and in the cabin filter. I’ve since switched back to the throw aways because I don’t feel like even on my best jobs cleaning those that I got close to how clean a brandy new filter is from the factory. And it’s way more time consuming for the lifetime ones. It’s a PITA I don’t want anymore. And when I think about it like that, I’d never even try one for the engine oil. Some stuff should just be done the old fashioned way. Hahaha

I have been running a K&P stainless mesh filter for the last two oil changes.

 

I was concerned about the efficiency of the thing so sent an oil sample to Blackstone labs.

 

I told them that I was running a stainless mesh filter and requested specifically that they check for excessive particulates.

 

The test results showed normal.

 

Still not sold on the efficiency of the filter, I will send another sample at the next oil change

 

I use brake clean and then simple green, then hot water and finally air – all applied from the inside of the filter - to clean the filter. I’m retired so the extra time is no big deal and I can see what the filter has trapped with the mesh and the built in magnet.

 

I have read that paper filters - because to the structure of the paper - can pass much larger particles and still be rated at smaller micron ability

 

I have read through numerous strings on oil filters and efficiency down to ten microns but assume that the testing is done on new filters.

 

According to the information on the K&P site, their filters flow a lot of oil so rarely bypass even when cold.

 

My question is that when the filters get loaded or contaminated with water such that the passage of oil becomes more restricted or when the oil is cold, do they bypass more often such that efficiency is reduced?

 

Does anyone know of testing that was done on filters in real world scenarios?

Tim I have a confession to make. When I wrote this I had all the bits and pieces except the bracket and the valve cover bung to plumb the entire system and was in fact using the K & P as a stand alone so...wrote the reply as if it were done when in fact is was not, fully anyway. After finding the bung was not available for my application and my source for the custom bracket going out of business I pulled and stored the K & P after maybe a half dozen oil changes. I've been running a Purolator Pure One ever since. 

 

I haven't given up on the project just on back burner. I want it to look factory. Picky I am. 

 

So why pull it? Because the difference in motor life between 30 micron and 10.5 micron at 99% is about a factor of 2. If and when I get the AMSOIL bypass is play that could double again. (GM filtration study)
