So yesterday for the first time I was driving in town and my temp always stays at 195 degrees and yesterday it suddenly jumpped to about 215 or so and back down and has stayed normal since any ideas 2004 Chevy Silverado 5.3

I just had to replace my temp sensor because it wasn't turning the fans on. Piece of cake, easy to get to and cheap. One of the first places I'd check, along with coolant level. Air in the system will cause that too.

Does sound like what happens on old GM sensors. Oil pressure will do the same when failing. It will jump around different areas and give false readings. Worth hooking up to the ECM and monitoring. Thermostats also stick over time but don't go throwing parts without diagnosis.

Probably the stepper motors inside the cluster.
