Anyone know what module controls the HVAC during remote start?

Anyone know what module controls the HVAC during remote start on a 2018 Silverado?

 

Long story short, I hate how the truck automatically turns on the A/C when it is remote started (even if I had the HVAC off when I parked it) and then once the key goes in the ignition, it turns back off. I'm curious what module is sending this command to the HVAC system. 

I'm trying to review all my options on correcting the problem for myself. A problem that I realize most folks don't have any issues with and think i'm stupid for wanting it different. 

 

My last resort will be to wire in a switch to the compressor clutch relay that I can flip on and off from inside and hope that doesn't through some type of codes.

If its above say 90 out, i like the A/C to automatically come on, but since GM has set it up to come on at 59 degrees, it ends up freezing me out and then I roll down the windows (which is how I usually drive) and it fogs my windows up.

If GM would have the remote start look at last known settings, I'd be perfect and happy as can be, but since they got rid of that ability and decided they should always control my comfort i'm forced to look at other options.

Why use the remote start if not for the temperature benefits?

I like to let my motor warm up a bit before I touch the gas. I drive a lot of short trips and if I didn’t let it warm up a little, it wouldn’t even get hot before I shut her off. 

 

there are no settings for it on my 18. 

 

Ive read you could change it on 14-15, but as of 16+ dealer can’t change it.

I agree with the original poster.  I always remote start my truck before getting in.  Why?  Because of the stupid EPA cat-light-off is why.  I don't want to get in my truck, wait for 2 minutes for the engine to settle down before I put it into gear.  I'm not a fan at shifting into drive or reverse at 1500 rpm's.  If I don't remote start, then I have to listen to the engine roar and sit at high idle until the catalytic converters light off.  I miss the 90's when I could just turn the key and the car would idle at a reasonable RPM.

I always wondered why these engines take a long time to idle down. So cat-light-off?

I live in Florida and having AC on with remote start is amazing.

I have no complaints about it.

The first 30 seconds of engine run time are where it will pollute the air the most and the emission standards for that are pretty tough.

 

The idea is to get cylinder temps and exhaust temps as hot as possible. They will run negative timing and the open loop EQ ratio (fuel ratio) is far richer than when warm to make it do what is needed.

Im in Texas, it’s hot here too.

But GM decided 59 degrees (literally) and above, the compressor kicks on. When it’s a 60 degree cold morning and still dark out, this makes for a F’n frozen truck when I get in. 

 

But what pisses me off the most... I usually drive with windows down to work in the mornings, usually still dark out. So say it’s 62 out, remote start it and A/C comes on full blast, thanks GM! ?,  get in and put the key in the ignition, it reverts back to how i had it last, now the compressor shuts off and blower motor goes back to 1/2 speed (where I usually keep it for outside air circulation) but now since compressor is off, it starts to really fog up all the windows with all that moisture the evaporator case was building up from when the A/C was actually running. 

Fogs up my windows and makes it harder to see since it’s dark out. 

 

Its 62 degrees, the sun is on the other side of the world, why does GM force me to have the A/C on with remote start? 

 

I know it may sound stupid to some. But I absolutely can’t stand this. I just want it to work like my old 2002 Silverado with aftermarket remote start, it looks at whatever setting it used last.

I'm the guy who will jump in the pool when it's 38 degrees outside, and I'll stay in a solid 20 minutes. My lady loves it, I radiate heat and it keeps her warm, she's a skinny little thing and always wants to turn the thermostat to 78. Our kids radiate half a megawatt of thermal energy too. It's our superpower. I'm loving the frosty truck on cold mornings. It wakes me up.

I get it though, you're right. It should be a setting the user can adjust. Doesn't seem like it would have been difficult to do, it was just overlooked.

Haha! I can deal with the cold, I’m not exactly skinny or close to my high school weight, it’s mainly the foggy windows that piss me off when I’m trying to enjoy the fresh air on my way to work. 

 

And the musty smell that goes with the foggy windows.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
