2019 Sierra Elevation winter tire/rims

Hi everyone!

Just joined the forum as I’ll be taking home a new(manager’s demo with 10,000km) 2019 Sierra Elevation this week.

The manager also installed a leveling kit and BF Goodrich AT KO2 tires, which is pretty cool.  Basically getting a brand new, lightly used truck at a big discount!

Live in a hilly area that gets snow and ice from time to time in the winter.  Ran winter tires last year on my 07 Silverado and it made a world of difference.

The BFG tires apparently have the snowflake/mountain symbol.

Has anyone had experience using these tires on snow and ice?

Also considering getting a set of dedicated winter tires/rims for added safety and to keep the factory 20” gloss black Elevation rims in good shape.

I know the rims that fit my 07 won’t work on the new truck and it also seems people are having issues with ‘14-‘18 rims as well.

Anyone know what size rims would fit? Heck,  I’m even ok with 17” steelies for winter as it seems the entry level trucks come with 17’s.

Are the callipers bigger on the higher level trim trucks? 

This truck has the Max Trailering Package if that makes a difference.

BFG ko2 are good in snow an ok on ice. Supposedly one or two styles of the k2xx wheels will fit. Haven’t found a straight answer on which ones. All t1xx have the same brake rotors and calipers. The problem is the width of the front caliper stick out further than previous generations and will contact most prior stock wheels on the backside of the pretty styled side of wheel if that makes sense.

I’ve seen quite a few t1xx takeoff wheels and tires in local craigslist for $800 - $1400. I’d keep an eye out there.

Or I just stick with the BFG’s this winter and try them out.  At most they’ll have 10,000 km on them so should still be in good shape.

My 07 performed ok a few years back when my Firestone AT tires were fairly new but ended up being god awful in the hardpacked snow and ice after they had some mileage on them!

Has anyone tried downsizing their wheels and tires on their t1xx trucks yet?

Thinking the most cost effective thing would be to pick up say a set of 17” steelies and 255/70r17 winter tires.  I’m a big fan of running narrower tires in winter.

Anyone know if older gen steelies fit?  Seems like older gen alloys won’t work for the most part.

TBH, I’ll  probably stick with my BFG AT’s this year and stay on top of washing the salt off my rims, unless I can find a good deal.

Tirerack shows tire size 255/70R17 as an option.  I’m assuming that’s for the base model work trucks.

Are the brake callipers the same on the base 2wd work trucks all the way up to Denali/High Country?

 

I have a 2019 Sierra Elevation 4x4 with 20” wheels and 275/65R20 BFG AT KO2’s.

Be careful, as some 17" wheels will not fit on the T1xx trucks. I've seen 17" wheels on some trucks, but they are typically aftermarket with less backspacing.

 

The KO2s will be fine for the winter, and 10k KM would show hardly any wear. I would consider them new.

 

Narrow tires will most definitely perform better, I would lean towards a 255/80/17 or 245/75/18 or similar size.

If you decide to go 18”, you can pretty much always find a new take off set or more of the basic 2019 Silverado 18” rims on eBay for $600 delivered (for example: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F352820310065 )

 

I just caught this deal ( https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F254323762814 ) on a set of 18” AT4 rims with tires and swapped around and am using my factory rims with a set of Nokian Hakka LT3s (one size taller) and the factory all seasons on the new rims for my summer set, and am selling the Goodyears, hopefully for enough to end up around that same $600 mark on my new wheels.

The 17" wheels on the base model are not the same as the previous 17" stock wheel models. They are a new product, to allow for caliper clearance.

Cool! That was what I was wondering wether the base model trucks had different callipers than the upper models, but seems they’re the same.

I also noticed that the steelies on the new model trucks look different than on the older trucks.

Safe to assume that the only way to go is pick up a set of rims from a 2019/20 truck.

I wouldn’t even trust the after market at this time.  I could totally see them screwing something like this up.

I found the DAI Peak wheels in the 17” size seem to fit.  However I could not find the 255/80/R17 or 265/80/R17 blizzak DM-V2.  I could only get the DM-V2 locally in a 265/70R17 but this is 4.2% smaller in diameter then the original 275/60/R20, any concerns with this size difference on ABS, Traction control, transmission/power train, etc...?

I noticed that going to Tire Rack you can build a winter tire/rim package and it options in 255/70R17’s.

Maybe a slightly small diameter tire isn’t the end of the world??

Anyone know on here if it would cause issues?
