2017 GMC Sierra Remove Towing Mirrors?

I went from standard mirrors to towing mirrors with @pgamboa's harness. As mentioned before it wasn't that long a job. One thing to note is that towing mirrors come with an additional bolt, so there will be an extra hole if you swap. No big deal, just know it's there so you don't freak out thinking you're missing one.

I don't notice any huge differences between driving with and without them. Personally I switched to two mirrors because I liked the larger split setup of the tow mirror and liked the look. I've found the tow mirrors give me less blind spots, but it could be how I have the split setup. I'd say use the tow mirrors for a few months, if you can't stand them you can probably swap with someone with standard mirrors for free or get cash on the trade.

As for the engine, I just passed 60k miles but so far the engine has been fine. I do the maintenance when it needs to be done and don't fret. I have heard some guys suffer from lifter failure but it seems to be a pretty minor number. I tuned my V4 mode out for peace of mind and because I like the way the V8 sounds with my exhaust. I didn't buy the truck for good MPGs as the highest priority so I was fine with the trade off. There are also companies that make kits that swap out the "adaptive lifters" (or whatever they are called) with standard lifters, thus mechanically turning it into an always on V8. If you're not doing the work on your own, or as part of other engine work, it's probably not worth the cost but again you can in an abundance of caution.

From my understanding these 5.3l Vortec engines are basically the same thing with refinements. The AFM system in the 14-18 trucks is miles ahead of the 07-13 system but outside that it's the same thing thats tired and true. You see a lot of guys here with over 200k miles, so assuming you treat it right you should have no problem seeing that. (although to be fair, I'd argue that most modern vehicles should be able to hit that without breaking stride)

like Penguin V11, i also tow different traliers on a regular bases. i have a 2104 silverado and switched from the dl8 to power folding tow mirrors. thanks to pgamboa's write up on this i did the wiring myself, next time i will buy his door harnesses. i took me 10 hours from start to finish. the new mirrors were power fold and a birthday present, other wise i would not have do this. they are great if you tow, but are a pain if you cant power fold them, my girl friend has walked into them twice and gives and gives me sh&t if i dont fold them. i also noticed at intersections you can loose a car looking to the right. i have only had them on for a month and a half, but the benefits of them mirrors out weight switching back

Thanks for stopping by Phil, I actually did just purchase the truck with towing mirrors. I think I am going to be able to live with them after all. However, I have only been driving the truck a couple of days now. It is really nice to know that I am not stuck with them by any means, that is making me a lot more comfortable. The dealer said that is honestly one of the major reasons the previous owner sold the truck, because of the towing mirrors.

That is another thing, I think the look is starting to grow on me. They definitely stick out a bit further, the standard mirrors on my old truck are not much longer than just the arms on the towing mirrors. Specifically, the towing mirrors are almost longer than my old standard mirrors before you even get to the actual mirror part of the towing mirrors if that makes sense. I already knew what to expect as I have driven even larger vehicles with them before. I think I am going to be comfortable with them.

I am used to walking by them now so I think the family and I will be okay. The only thing I have ever ran into are hitches and I usually blurt out a similar word when running into them. I have learned to be mindful of them too, both when walking by them and parking close to them. People used to hit our hitches and have accidents all the time. So far I am accident free, knock on wood.

I did just the opposite.  My 2018 Sierra Denali Extreme  4x4 had regular chrome mirrors and I purchased it new solely for the purpose of pulling my travel trailer, so I bought the power fold extendable towing mirrors and had the dealer install them.  I still have the original mirrors in chrome (heated, power fold with signal leds in the glass and down light)  I tried selling them on eBay to no avail.  I'm lazy and don't want to take the time to find another way to sell.   If you did buy that truck and still want regular mirrors you can have mine for free  They are packed and ready to ship so all you would need to do is pay shipping.  I just want them out of my garage!    Just let me know.

Cheers,

Dak

PM sent - I'd gladly take those mirrors if your not longer wanting them, and certainly wouldn't take them for free. They are worth something and would make you an offer on them and of course pay any shipping charges.  This is great timing as I actually just smacked mine on the side of the garage door recently and been looking for an OEM replacement.  If you still have them and are interested let me know and we can work something out :)

Hi, I received your PM..  all good and they are yours.  No internet in the house here since last night.  I'm using the hotspot in my truck and my phone.  When it comes on I'll contact you, send pics, etc.  Glad someone can use them!      Later..

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
