Just bought a 2013 1500 wt 5.3 and changed the oil. I put in 6qt + new filter. Dipstick reads exactly 3/4 full. Anyone ever see this before?

I know for sure I need a 5qt jug and an extra qt every time.  I use like half the extra qt to get it at 50%

Fun fact, my wifes 2014 crv uses nearly all of a 5qt jug and her car had a 2litre engine ?

Should be 6.  What filter did you use?

I've had my dipstick trick me a few times like that.  6 Quarts only and I run the longer filter so the reading is just below full.

M1 filter 113a.....

My manual says 6, my Haynes manual says 6, everywhere I read says 6. Maybe I should just keep it at the 3/4 mark? Who knows if someone put a different dipstick in there.

I changed the oil yesterday, drove it and let it sit for the night. I forgot to check it right away today and started it to get it up on ramps. I backed it back down and let it sit for 1 hr before checking the oil. That should be plenty of time for a good dipstick reading shouldnt it?

GM recommendation is midpoint on the hatchmark.

Wouldnt that mean its low 1/2qt?  I have never read that anywhere. Just curious where did you get that info?

Oil level below crosshatches is LOW

Oil level above crosshatches is HIGH

Oil level in crosshatch area is normal operating level

Directly from the owners manual (pretty useful little book...GM should think about putting them in every vehicle)?

Yeah asking how to read a dipstick wasn't the question. Maybe there should be a reading comprehension manual for people like you before you post ?

My 2012 5.3 with a stock/regular length oil filter would read above the top hash mark with an oil and filter change(6 quarts) after sitting over night and then checking it.

I now use a Wix 57045 oil filter that is about an inch longer.

This filter requires 6 quarts and 6 ounces with a filter and oil change after sitting over night. Right on the full mark.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Add oil until it reads full if you like.

And this wasn't a "how to read a dipstick" post. If you would have read the manual before posting you would have seen that it clearly states if oil level is below the crosshatched area, then you add oil.  If oil level is above crosshatched area, you should drain the excess oil.  That indicates that the crosshatched area is the "proper operating range".  It then goes on to read "Add enough oil to put the level SOMEWHERE in the proper operating range" ie, the crosshatched area.

Maybe this will be the answer you're looking for...

With my '10 Sierra, sometimes the oil level would be at the top of the crosshatched area.  Sometimes it would be in the middle of the crosshatched area.  Sometimes it would be about 1/4 up from the bottom of the crosshatched area.  But, it was always in the crosshatched area (just like the f'n manual shows).  Now, is that what you were looking for, or do you want to nitpick someone's reply a little more??
