There are only four ways oil gets out of the motor.

1.) Leaks
2.) PCV system
3.) Guides/Seals
4.) Rings

Consumer Reports did a survey in 2014 and found that from 498,000 replies that only 2% used a quart or more within the OEM's recommended OCI. Seems the entire 2% is on this site. [emoji4]

Interesting though, I’ve never ever thought of joining any forums until past few years in order to learn or give back what I’ve learned throughout the years, forums recently have for the most part focused on cheapest of products in order to just get by as well as bickering and idiotic complaints. Believe when I say sometimes I question as to why even attempt to explain why I use a product cause then you’ll have someone much younger and far less experienced counter everything I’ve learned and expressed with “but I found XYZ product much cheaper than what you use”..... good Lord, if that’s what the forums are full of then I may be right cause so far and in my eyes only a few stand out as being productive and qualified to give out recommendations and you are one of them Grumpy, good job!

I could never understand how manufactures can say that consuming oil is normal.  Customer A truck could consume almost zero oil and customer b can consume 1 qt per 1000 miles, but they tell customer B that its normal.  My 16 and even my 19 with lifter issues consumes zero to minimal oil. The level on the dipstick stays the same.

You’re absolutely correct, I’d think that wouldn’t come across very well with the EPA considering the motors are supposed to be designed in order to appease the EPA. IMHO, just more BS excuses in order to save money. GM as well as others can only afford so much in warranty work. Bet if you get enough complaints out there then GM will be forced to correct these issues and no more “that’s normal” especially since this is how the Transmission issues came to light, complain enough and GM will be forced to fix the issues.

How often are you guys changing oil?

Oil consumption is something that every manufacturer deals with.

7k on my 16 and I drove that truck hard. never burned a drop.

I got two stories at the dealership on maintenance intervals:

1. Every 5k miles

2. When the oil life meter hits 0%.

What is it?

Well, used to be much higher OCI’s, GM lowered it and though it’s not updated on your computer, I’d highly recommend not going over 5K miles. These DI motors get really dirty quickly and the minimum required oil is minimum at the most, put the best in that you can afford and change 5k miles. I saw somewhere that oil has really started evolving and focusing on becoming much more protective by raising the cleaning and protective properties added to the base stock oils which are basic lowest requirements.

Yeah, going above 5k seems like a mistake and I would be uncomfortable with it anyway.

I've used Royal Purple in the past, I'm assuming that would work fine in the 6.2.

I added 1/2 quart in 2500 miles.  Not worried about it.  I happened to use the black jug of Castrol, so my motor should seize at any moment.

Had a Subaru that 1 quart in 1000 miles was considered acceptable, but it never used any.

Can I ask a question?  What was GM OCI'S and what are they presently?  Maybe I have missed something in last 30-40yrs?

That’s something I’ve seen on the Internet and when I asked the service department, they’ve heard something as well. Anything else, you’ll have to do your own research. I know it’s at 7500 but that’s just highway driving, idling for long periods and short stop and go driving breaks down the oil much faster so common sense would prevail.

You guys can cry about it all you want and claim it is unacceptable but if you think something will be done about it, you are going to be laughed away at the service department.  And they don't care if you go with another brand.  why?  Because the other brand is burning oil too.  Just the nature of today's modern engines.

A few decades ago service stations carried jars of oil right next to the pump.  It wasn't unusual for the attendant to add a quart to your engine while he was filling your tank and cleaning your windows.  It would be an extraordinary circumstance to see someone with their hood up adding oil at a gas pump in this millennium.  I am confident that service advisors are taught/told a new and broader understanding of the terms "normal" and "can't replicate".  I am also sure service advisors deal with customers that are less than sincere.  In my situation, I was polite, persistent and kept detailed notes.  At oil change time, I made sure my truck was filled to the full line, not above or below. (My dealer did the changes.)  When I needed a top-up between changes, I had my local quick-lube add the oil.  This way I got a dated receipt with the exact quantity added.  It took time but I believe it was the service advisor that was the key in getting my truck fixed.  Bringing in two or three receipts of significant amounts of oil being added between scheduled oil changes moved his perception from normal to unusual.  A lengthy powertrain warranty adds comfort but don't procrastinate in your efforts to deal with such matters.  Time and miles have a nasty habit of slipping by quickly!

The opinions are vast.

I'll ad this.

I worked in a gas station in the 70's while in school. Worked there for 3 years.

Full service. Gas pumped for the customer. Oil checked if requested. Windshield cleaned if requested was company policy.

After a while a got to know the regular customers.

I also got to know the ones with oil using motors.

The oil users were low compared to the number of vehicles that came through.

Of course some put in good oil and others the junk oil.

I think Grumpy's post on oil usage from Consumer Reports makes sense.

I have never owned a vehicle that was an oil user. Lucky?

I still say it's the luck of the draw.( Pun intended. Casino poker player.)

:)
