My truck uses 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles.   Gm has a service bulletin saying that ms acceptable.   Makes no sense to me got a new truck and got add oil twice in between oil changes...   has anyone else had this problem and what can I do about it?

You can start by suppling more information.

Which motor? Where do you live? How do you drive, speed, load? How many miles on the truck? Did you buy it new? What gearing? What oil are you currently using? What are your expectations? Give us something to work with.

Some oil burn off isn't out of the norm and it isn't just GM. BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Porsche all have acceptable oil consumption levels, it is a liquid in a hot engine and even the best oils such as Super Tech cannot strive off oil burn off when finding a way past mechanical parts. If it falls in their acceptable levels there won't be much you can do other than check it and top it off, could be any number of things causing it. The LS1 one of the most revered and reliable performance engines was known for oil consumption and it would still last 100's of thousands of  miles while getting beat on and many time sprayed or boosted. I would no worry about it and just check it.

For what it is worth I had a coworker that had excessive oil consumption with Amsoil, when he switched to Liberty Gold the consumption stopped. Different engines can like different oils...

Yo, did you just use "best oils such as SuperTech".

SuperTech is one of the worst oils you can buy. I cant even think of a worst oil to put in a vehicle. These motors are not LS platforms, LT platforms now. Close but not the same.

I had this issue with my 2009 GMC Sierra 5.3 Vortec.  I did not find this level of consumption acceptable and it took me a lot of time, patience and persistence to get GM to agree.  When they finally repaired the engine,  it served me another 100k with no topping up between oil changes.  I bought a new Sierra in '15 and no consumption issues to date.   You may have a few hoops to go through and it may get worse before it gets better, but  you have loads of powertrain warranty.  It can be fixed!

23K miles on my 2018 5.3 and mine does not consume one drop off oil yet! I've completed 4 oil changes and oil always looks good.

I do have AFM disabled! Only thing my truck has that is not stock.

Pretty much sums it up.

I'm at 20k miles now in the year I've owned my truck. It's been using a little under a quart between my oil changes (every 5k). I don't think too much of it.

I call BS! You’re one of the few that always pops up anytime and every time Amsoil is mentioned and has something to say. Anyone on these forums can look for themselves as to the best oil is the industry and it sure isn’t Walmart oil like you’ve mentioned. A 100% synthetic motor oil has virtually ZERO burn off and cannot be compared to budget oil.

Let’s just move along now and not pull insecurities out from under a hat lol

I see your catch' n some heat Tyler. :) Sorry to see that.

Some facts.

All FULL SYNTHETIC oils are minimum Group III/PAO.

All DEXOS 1 GEN2 oils MUST meet tighter specs than the API set out for SN-PLUS, which by, the way include a reduced NOACK, and a requirement to be a FULL SYNTHETIC.  They must meet these narrower standards. Be a PAO/Group III blend with a NOACK of less than 13%. Something an SAE SN-PLUS can not say. There are CONVENTIONAL and Synthetic Blends that meet the broader SN-PLUS standards. This places Super Tech by definition in the top third of all SN-PLUS lubricants. You don't even have to test it to know. It carries the licensing labeling.

This indicates that within the group which is defined by some very narrow parameters ANY oil that carries the label is chemically defined and corporately policed. Grab VOA's from a half dozen in the group and they will ALL be pretty much the same. Best and worst starts to loose meaning given the DEXOS1 GEN2 context which is exactly the point of the license.

Ya which engine specifically? My 5.3 has 8k miles and so far there has been no oil consumption.

I previously owned an older 5.3 so i’ve been keeping an eye on it periodically.

I agree the 5.3L I had in my 2019 didn’t burn any oil at all between oil changes.

You guys can cry about it all you want and claim it is unacceptable but if you think something will be done about it, you are going to be laughed away at the service department.  And they don't care if you go with another brand.  why?  Because the other brand is burning oil too.  Just the nature of today's modern engines.

Actually my 2005 5.3 consumed oil at twice the rate my 14 6.2 does. This was a pre afm or any cylinder trickery too. Imo 1 quart every 2k is a tad excessive imo regardless of what gm says. I think it is rather clear gm wants to get to the end of warranty phase so they can hide behind that.

There are only four ways oil gets out of the motor.

1.) Leaks

2.) PCV system

3.) Guides/Seals

4.) Rings

Consumer Reports did a survey in 2014 and found that from 498,000 replies that only 2% used a quart or more within the OEM's recommended OCI. Seems the entire 2% is on this site. :)
