Hi, just found this site on a google search.  I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 double cab 4x4.  Bought it new in early 2014, it now has just over 100k miles on it.  About 3 weeks ago I was leaving my house going down an ice covered hill around a 90 degree left hand turn when my steering just locked up. Couldn’t do anything.  I hit the brakes but we all k ow that is useless on an ice covered hill. I hit a tree at approximately 7 mph right across the right front headlights.  Damage is now at $9,746 and the body shop found a trouble code for power steering failure.  My insurance doesn’t believe me, so I’m fighting them on it,   It is almost done with body work then it goes to the Chevy dealer for diagnosis of the steering problem. I had the power steering recall done in 2018 but it appears it didn’t fix it.  Any ideas on how to proceed???

Make darn sure you get that rack and pinion steering replaced. Imagine if you were going 20+mph. Smh. Imo the rack and pinion steering is not meant for these trucks.

Welcome to the site, sorry your first post is a pretty bad one.

They should be able to retrieve any code that has been present for you (the dealership). That should be proof enough with a printout showing it, you would think.

I don’t understand why the insurance company would care if the steering locked up or didn’t lock up.
If he never spoke up about it they would overlook it and it wouldn't be considered for replacement.

It’s because now the insurance company says the accident was my fault and will jack my rates up.

Anyway, an update:
total for repairs came to just shy of $11,000 for a 5-7mph crash.  The body shop took my truck to the local Chevy dealership who has done all of the routine maintenance and all 16 recalls on my truck. They looked it over and say the cant find anything wrong. All is good to go.  So I pick my truck up and within a mile the right rear blinker goes out. I go to autozone and get a bulb. Replace it, all good.  Then yesterday (not even 2 weeks after I get my truck back) I go to start it and nothing, zilch.  No power period.  I take the battery cables off, clean them even though they look pretty good.  Put them back on, truck fires up.   Today while driving to Walmart (60 miles away) goong around a corner at 70 mph the truck act’s like U just switched off the engine for about 2 seconds, it feels like the engine has died then takes off again.   I have a feeling that this thing is going to die a horrible death and I hope the seatbelts and airbags do their job.

I'd drop it off to an independent shop let them write it up. Give details on whats happened due to the wreck and show the insurance. Then you can push that 2k+ replacement and have them figure why the engine shuts off.

It's all up to if the dealer or whoever is fixing it can find out what exactly caused it to lock up and if that is good enough for the insurance or if they want the dealer or GM involved. I have heard of it jerking and being hard to turn but never a complete lock up. The insurance company is doing what I would expect them to do if someone wrecked their truck on an icy road.

The question is, was it an actual lock up or was it the loss of electronic power steering assist that may make it seem like it lock up?

I know how it feels not to have power steering with a traditional steering setup but is it any more difficult not to have power steering with a rack and pinion?

Bash:   Long story short, I don’t have the time, energy or money to fight GM or Progressive so I’m just moving on.    My plan is to dump the truck but I need 2 more years out of it before I do that.

Blain:   It was not like when the steering wheel locks up when the keys are out, It was as if there was an impossibly strong person fighting me over the wheel. I could turn it a few inches in either direction but then It would groan, whine and “fight back”.
