So I picked up my new 2020 Sierra 2500HD Denali this past weekend. Of course it comes with the free onstar for a period of time. I really like how the direction and distance of the next turn pops up in the heads up display. My question is- When Onstar goes away will that function go away too? or does that function still work if I use Waze, google maps or some other non onstar navigation app?

Navigation function of the truck is separate from the Navigation services provided by OnStar, so this functionality should not go away.  Regardless, you will not be able to use Waze, google or any other non-GM navigation system in the HUD display.

First off - thanks for the reply. But now I'm really confused. If I cant use waze, google or any other non GM navigation app, I thought that meant it WOULD go away, as the nav I'm using now (to be able to see it in HUD) is the Onstar navigation. It's called Onstar turn by turn navigation.

Sorry for the confusion - I could be incorrect as I am just going off of what I read and how my older trucks works, in terms of the turn by turn navigation (my 2020 is on order, so cannot test).  With my old truck, even though I did not have the turn by turn navigation activated by OnStar, I could still use the trucks navigation system to get turn by turn directions.  My assumption was that this would work the same for the new trucks.

I am fairly certain though, that other apps will not transmit to the HUD.

Ahhh.. so maybe what I am seeing in the HUD is not onstar nav but rather the GM nav app. That's probably correct as I go thru the infotainment screen  and hit NAV. That's good news as that means cancelling onstar will not affect that turn by turn thing showing up in the HUD. Thanks again.

No worries - sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

The HUD displays the GM nav app (sd card nav). If you switch to andriod auto or apple carplay and use the google/apple nav apps, they will not display in the HUD.

Also, once your free data trial expires, you will not get traffic updates in your GM nav app unless you sign up for a data plan ($15 -$25) and the traffic plan ($10). You will still have the GM nav, just no traffic updates.

I'm also going to assume you won't get any updates to the map itself without a data and/or traffic plan. This is yet another very under documented area on these vehicles (and seems neither GM or OnStar always are able to give you a straight answer).

I’m not sure on GM but typically in my experience you can still get map updates (such as updated roads etc) but without the data plan you won’t get the live updates such as traffic.

You can still use the nav and search for addresses, stores, etc. you just lose any real-time feedback.

But I can confirm what was said above that the HUD is just the factory gm nav, not onstar, and any other map software (is Waze, apple, android) will not show up in the HUD. I wish it did!

I never use factory nav anymore, apple CarPlay options are so much better.

I wish it would show google directions. The gmc nav program is horrible...same with voice. Someone please hack it.

I agree.  The GM Nav is horrible IMO.  Not necessarily the look or the integration with the HUD but the actual routing is terrible.  I have checked all of the route settings yet it continues to plan routes that are bizarre and I have Onstar integrated with it as well.  It has been so bad at planning routes that I can no longer trust it.  It will get you where you ask it to take you but crazy ridiculous routes.  I've entered in directions to places that I know the best route to, the NAV will route and give an estimated arrival time of let's say 11:30.  Along the route it will have me turn down a road that I know is not a good route, I'll continue straight at which point the Nav re-routes and my estimated arrival time drops by 5 minutes...This happens all the time.  Save your money and don't get factory nav, use carplay or the android option.
