New lifters on my brand new truck

Hello all,

I bought a brand new 2019 Chevy Silverado and have put on less than 700 miles on the vehicle.   A couple of days ago my engine started to sputter and I had it towed to a dealership.  The dealership called and said they have to replace the lifters under warranty and if that doesn't work they will have to replace the whole engine.  Obviously this is not ideal solution for me, I am not sure what kind of damage that was done to the engine nor am I sure how these repairs will affect the longevity of the motor.  I was hoping someone could give me suggestions on what my next steps should be....

I wished I hadn't ignored the early warnings with my truck. Now I'm stuck with it, since I couldn't give it away with just 50k on the clock in pristine cosmetic condition, since everyone knows how failure prone the 5.3 AFM system is in mine.

 

My recommendation is dump it, and don't look back! Harsh, but if you knew what was coming, you'd thank me.

 

What to replace it with ... hmmmm. You can go with Ford, and have timing chain failures by 100k miles, & the "death wobble",  stick with GM and have valvetrain and injector failures (among other things) by 100k, or Ram and have DoD failures, transmission and front end issues, general poor quality failures (oil leaks from driveline and suspension, blown heater cores, etc.), and body rot by 100k . Toyota seems to have their crap together, but the fuel mileage sucks, as does the towing capacity.

 

If I had to do it again, I'd build my own truck.

Sorry for the dilemma your in.

 

First, not all of these trucks or other brands have problems.

Lots of them don't IMO.

 

I would let them fix it. Drive it and see how it goes. It's still under warranty.

My goal would be to avoid buying another truck and losing money.

I beg to differ. I see it, and hear about it from fellow techs all day, every day. Things are bad in the auto industry today ... worse than most people will ever know.

Most of the time there is no damage done other than a bad lifter and maybe a bad pushrod.  Worst case scenario, it took the camshaft.  If the dealer does the repair correct, they should replace the AFM lifters for both cylinders on the failing side and replace the VLOM as well.  There should be no harm to the engine otherwise.    

 

Whether its repaired or they replace the engine, I'd keep driving it.  $hit happens.  I would however spend the $200 and get a Range AFM disabler to prevent this from happening again.

I feel your pain... however.. i was getting one of the two free oil changes on my '18.. and i was wandering around the showroom. One of the Ford techs (next door) was in regaling the GMC sales people about an F150 he just looked at.. He said oil was leaking all over so much you couldn't even tell where to start looking for the leak... on the other hand my F150 leaked from oil pan all the time.. 4 pans down the road... bottom line is these things break.. when you run out of tolerance for it ... get rid of it..

Welcome to the site.

 

Sorry to hear about your truck, but since it is the first failure, and they are going to fix it, you really have no recourse at the moment as far as buyback or Lemon Law.

 

Let them do the work, start driving it again and see what happens, you still have your Bumper to Bumper intact, so try not to worry about what might happen, just enjoy your still pretty new truck.

But much better then some are trying to make it sound...

 

Honestly OP very few have the failure, let them fix it and move on. There are always going to be those few that have had something gone wrong and are in spite and try and make it sound like the failure rate is 50% and you will end up with junk and troubles blah blah blah as you are seeing in this thread. Truth is for as few of issues as you see on the forum this is a small percentage of the trucks out there so think how few of failures there are. Let them fix it and enjoy, you should be good to go, enjoy!

As consumers we deal with it every day....Most of the Trucks and competitors have little to no issues either....CRAP happens any brand.  If you want problems take to the dealer and see where problems exist the dealers awesome workmanship and ZERO knowledge about the products they sell/maintain.

Blanket statements of poor dealer performance I disagree with.

You are putting all techs in the garbage can and that's not true.

Some are good and care.

 

Same thing with people in your line of work.

Poor performance to above average performance.

Been there. Done that.

If you are going to dump it because it had a warrantee claim, you may as well go back to walking and taxis.  There is a well known reason why new vehicles have warranties, sometimes defects happen.  If it was me, I would push for a complete NEW engine.  To have an internal component fail due to defect would make me wonder what else happened that day.  With the way engine parts are made (technology wise) it would be more likely to have a "batch" failure on parts like lifters.  That would mean all engines made in the plant where yours was made, than contained the same batch number lifters, will likely also fail, and in this case more than likely failed over a year ago.  If you just took possession of this 2019 truck, it is nearly 2 years old, manufacturing wise.  That has nothing to do with what caused the issue, just pointing out that non-current vehicles actually have a repair history already.  See if the service manager can get some details about warrantee claims on vehicles that were manufactured both before and after yours.  In my way of thinking, he should be able to run VINs that are identical to yours, plus or minus 10 vehicles.  If the last 2 digits in your VIN are 15, you would like to see if any engine warranty claims were made on trucks with the same first 15 digits as yours, and the last two covering a range of 05-25.  This may not be possible due to the check digit(assuming they still use one in the VIN), but if it does, you can use that information to see if it is just a one-off piece of crap inside a lifter or some batch issue.

 

You are in a bad spot financially wise with this truck.  It is valued as a 2 year old truck now.  You are very likely upside down if you financed it with a small down-payment.  You may be able to go back to your salesman and see what he can do.  If you are under a month of ownership, and under 1k in miles, he may be able to undo the purchase, and get you into a current model year(actually even a 2020 is soon to be non-current model) for not much difference.  Take your wife in with you to see the salesman, and both of you put on your best sad face(take note of what your kids do when they want something) and see what he can do.

If people keep doing this - just "dealing with it" - manufacturers will have ZERO incentive to change. They have none now! This is why we're commenting on yet ANOTHER engine failure 13 model years after I bought my piece of s#@t.

 

Yep - everything has problems today. When are we going to stand up and say, WE'VE HAD ENOUGH????

Who was talking about dealers? I'm taking about MANUFACTURERS - they are the root of this problem!!! It all starts with THEM.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
