We can't tell you engine revs without you telling us what size tires you are running.

You need to pick the best gear ratio based on needs, tire size and what you are using the truck for.

Stock 6 speed trucks have either 3.42's or 3.73's with the upgraded max towing package. If you have 3.42's I would suggest 3.90's or 4.10's depending on tire size. You can use online calculators to figure out cruising rpm if you know your gear ratio, tire size and 6th gears final drive value.

I’d rather have more power than gears personally

Everything in the intake path and exhaust path would get my money before them

When I was young and dumber than I am now part of my income and most of my fun came from street racing and I rarely lost. In this environment the automatic rules. Gear, converter and a trans brake coupled to a suspension set up to bite instead of spin will make a good stout stock motor feared. Even more so if you are careful about which races you take.

Street Racing is STUPID and DANGEROUS.

Take it to the track.

I'll take setup over power any day of the week. There were plenty of stock motor cars in the 50's/60's that would dangle the front wheels in the air with a good setup and the 'right' gearing.

In 1968 the NHRA Stock Class Record were nuts!

Check out the F/SA record then held by a 1957 Ford 312 "Y" block and a Ford-O-Matic 3 speed!

Speeds and times for M and N stock automatic from flying barns with 265's and 283's. 14's on 200 hp.

exactly the point I’ve been trying to make.

the less gears your trans has the more important the rear end is.

It’s been nearly 100 years of the rear end ratio being very important and I think it’s the only reason anybody wants to swap them.

the math sure doesn’t make much sense when you have an 8 or 10 speed

I agree. I’d also like more pep out of the truck. I don’t have turbo money at the moment so anything I could do to make it fun would be great

In a street application a first gear ratio of 10:1 on a 26" tire is pretty sweet.

Ford Top Loader Close Ratio box has a 2.32 first gear. Coupled to a 4.3 diff = 10.1:1

6L80E has a 4.03 first gear and a 3.08 gear gives 12.4:1 but adjusting for the 31" tire 10.4:1

Problem is a car with a 4.30 gear is singing it's rods out in top gear at highway speeds and the 6L80E with a 3.08 is hardly off idle.

Stuff a 3.42 in the Chevy with the 6L80E and you have drag worthy 12:1 low gear tire adjusted and it's still 70 mph friendly

8 speed 4.56 1st and 10 speed 4.70 low Tank gearing. All three have high gears of .64-.67

Thanks, think I just made my gear choice. ?

forget the turbos for now.. make it fun to drive on the street, i suggest getting the transmission tuned to shift better and clean up all the available parameters for top performance. this makes it enjoyable to drive, the power comes later when you get the trans under control
