Just bought a 2021 Silverado RTS 3.0 Duramax 5 days ago. 147 miles and this just happened to me too. 2nd try and it fired right up. I'll be monitoring to see what happens.

2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 3.0 Duramax same problem crank no start first time around 1500 miles now the problem is more frequent with 11000 miles no engine codes. Truck will start after about 15 min of set time seems to reset I'm not sure  may be fuel pressure sensor i see other owners having same problem

“Bent trigger Wheel” is what GMs bulletin said. I took it to dealership and they searched for bulletins and found that. 
I guess I will know next week, when they replace the part( being shipped) whether the trigger wheel is bent or not.

How did you ask for a new truck LOL ? I want to go down that route if they can't fix it next week (they said it's the bent trigger wheel). Since GM issued bulletin on this specific issue, they know it's legit.

Having the same issue with new 2021 Elevation.

Truck has less than 1000KM or 650mi

Has happened about 8 times now, can't find pattern. Hot, Cold, shut off for 8 hours, shut off for 5 minutes, no consistency.

 

Dealer doesn't have any room before June 21st. 

Will post update after the service.

Was able to move the appointment up to next Wednesday.

While talking to the Service advisor, I gave him the document ID 5840493 along with a video of the extended crank.

He said it looks like the issue I am having.

GM has this repair at 3.1 hours. He mentioned it should be closer to 5 hours.

 

I have included a recording of what happened on mine, if it can help someone else.

Yes,  I had the same problem. I have a AT4 with a 3.0. this has happened 4 different times within 2 weeks. Now my truck is a case study.

Hey guys I have an update! So dealership finally got everything dialed in. Apparently mine was the first one to find the fix. I have the pictures of the bent timing ring for the camshaft. It’s a pretty big job. Involves removing cab, changing timing gears and chain on top of the ring. I suggest anyone having this issue contact your dealer immediately. If the bent ring is bent enough, it can touch the timing chain causing damage to the chain. Truck runs beautifully for now! Will keep updated in maybe a months time to let you fellas know how it’s going.

Holy ******.... removing the cab??  What's the estimate rework time on this job?  Do they have any way to verify the "cranks but won't start"?  Mines done it 3 times since new (<1500 miles)

For sure. I’ll try to attach them and not screw this up. The service manager sent me the ring picture. He said he took the picture and the engineers had to come. He said B was my truck and A was a picture from an engineer. Here’s the work order of the work. Sorry it’s not showing more. I’m just to lazy to mark out my info. They didn’t say what the job time would be. I’d imagine a week at least. Just for waiting on parts. Mine took 2 months because apparently I was the first or at least my dealer was the first to figure out the issue. The dealership said GMs bill for that fix is 11 grand. 💀

I have a 21 Silverado Duramax 3.0, and have had this happen twice to me already. Once at 500 miles, then again today 1600. Has anyone else taken their truck to dealer for the bulletin fix?

Wow!  What a bummer, not happy GM has to take the whole truck apart to get this fixed... I guess you just have to pray you have a good tech doing all the work...   I wonder how much work it is to get the camshaft position sensor out??  I'm about to get the bore scope out and give it a try.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
