Hello all.
Recently got a 2021 Trail Boss with the 5.3 .
My manual clearly states to use a PF63E oil filter.  However the filter on my truck (original filter- brand new truck) is marked as PF63. Just PF63... no E.

I tried to search the topic here and found a lot of discussion about the e cores and other filters.  But have they changed specs?  I thought PF63 had the wrong bypass setting for the new 5.3 trucks?

I plan to go with a different brand filter from here on, but should I cross reference from PF63E or PF63?

If I remember correctly, the AC Delco filters were notorious for leaking at the seal and the oil filter seal was redesigned somewhat to correct the measure.

Either way, your better served by going to a different oil filter.  Don't misunderstand me, the AC Delco will serve the purpose intended by the manufacturer, but other filters far surpass it in filtration abilities and will do a better job above and beyond that of OEM specifications.  Remember, OEM specifications are a MINIMUM, meaning the factory filter is meeting a MINIMUM standard and will easily be outperformed by filters being held to a higher standard.

I don't understand why GM does what it does but you can run either one.  I can't find the information but I want to say I read somewhere that GM was going back to just the PF63.

I have used both with no issues on several vehicles.   Two different Chevy Traverse's, Silverado's and Suburbans.  I bought a case of PF63E off ebay for $40 a while back which worked out to be a little over $3.00 a filter.

Lots of oil filter choices. I would go with Wix or WixXP.

Also, just incase you were unaware and doing the oil change yourself, one of the main culprits for a leaky oil filter is improper lubrication of the seal prior to installation.  Put a dab of oil on your finger and run it along the seal surface of the filter prior to installing.  It will assist with a proper mating surface and keep a potentially dry seal from stretching or tearing resulting in leaks.

PF63 has 12 psi bypass spring

PF63E a 22 psi bypass spring

The PF63E was the replacement for the PF63 after the first year of the Ecotec3 engine cycle, 2015. This was done to prevent unfiltered oil reaching the VLOM improving protection for the AFM lifters. For whatever reason GM, or is it gm, is still using NOS filters on new trucks. Working off stock? Perhaps but the E (the manual) is correct.

Thank you folks.

Im not sure either why GM would specify one filter in the manual and not have it on the truck... Especially if it has a different rated bypass spring.  But that’s what they did.  Now that it’s 2000 miles in, I guess I’m going to change to a filter I know is correct.

I just contacted a friend of mine that works at a Chevrolet dealership in the parts department.  He said that GM has dropped the E and now it is just the PF63 filter that they are getting in.

Why play the game with GM. I would buy another brand.

I use the PF63E.  Dealers around me only tried to sell me the PF63 after telling them GM has a different spec for the bypass valve they told me they could order the E. I had same problem with my Impala, and I offered to show them the GM service bulletin saying not to replace the E filter with a regular one because of the high oil pressure of the motor will cause the filter to open the bypass valve and over time this unfiltered oil will damage the engine. They parts guys seem to think what ever they say is right and don't care about GM putting out info trying to stop dealers from using wrong filters. They didn't care that GM said not to use the filter they had in stock and were trying to sell me. So I would use whats in the manual PF63E. I honestly wonder how many if these motors with early failure or oil consumption issues are caused by dealers using wrong filter?

To the guy saying they dropped the E version of the filter. I'm sure they would have to put a service bulletin out so customers would know its OK. My tuck was made this year and still calls for the E filter.

The PF63E has been replaced by the PF63, same with most of the other filters (IE- PF64E is now PF64) GM has dropped the "E" designation, the design is the same.

I personally run a UPF63R on my 2015 Silverado 6.2 (As well as a UPF64R on my '18 Cruze and a UPF48R on my '11 Camaro SS)

I'm the guy that said they dropped the "E", the part numbers changed a few months ago on most oil filters dropping the "E" designation. The internals of the filter are the same. There was/is no TSB on it, we get answerbacks from GM telling us about number changes and letting us dealers know that a part number is changing, most of the time it does not involve a TSB.

Also, we go by the long 8-digit GM part number, not the short AC-Delco number, the newest 63 filter is GM part# 12707246

    • Atlas,   Then following your logic we can't believe any story that the MSM produces? I mean it's documented they heavily donate to Democrat candidates. Vote Democrat in high percentages. Many MSM talents are married to Democrat politicians, Gov. employees. That goes for on-air and off, personalities and reporters. So they would all be biased and nothing they produce is to be believed in your mind?   Again the article simply was about ways AI can be used for pricing products. Nothing discounted current situations as a factor.    Again keep looking through your left/right lenses. I don't live my life that way.   And as a heads up this thread will be cleaned up again as much of this is off topic and is receiving
    • Yes, and only a couple years before delivery. 🙄
    • So you're saying toss the baby out with the bathwater? @txab posted article was her take on how AI can be used to manipulate pricing as it already does and has been rebuked by the judiciasry in housing. How AI can be and is used to maximize refinery or even Amazon operations all of which are true but because she is who she is; that makes what she says about what is true, false? Is that something akin to Pre-justice aka prejudice?    Look, I'm first in line to approach all information with caution just because we live in a world where people like to lie about someone or something with such a straight face and in such volume that it makes digging to the truth wearisome. Meaning I understand the skepticisms but if I were to toss out everything a person is for a view they hold then my pool of people to draw wisdom from would be non-existent and I'd be forced to reinvent the wheel daily. Not practical.    "Be innocent as a dove but as cautious as a serpent."    Test each word. Every good lie is part truth or no one would believe it. Find the truth in it and reject what isn't.    On this one, AI is being used to do what has been done by hand for hundreds of years already but at such speed, the point of a computer, that it is more easily monetized. This one wasn't that hard a lift.    I wrote a few formulas in a Lotus 123 program decades ago, a series of linked Macros actually, that allowed a daily inventory to be turned into a running P&L and production plan. Something that took three departments a week to assemble now took the time it takes to input the 'daily changes' in inventory. Later that was ungraded to the more powerful Excel program an and integrated with bar code scanning, inventory to supply was done once per shift. It had a huge impact on production scheduling, Seamless interruption flexibility, inventory error reduction, raw materials cost effective utilization and scrap reduction. Huge improvement in the bottom line. I spent months on that and AI could have done it in minutes. So yes, it not only can be used, they would be foolish to not try. The legality, ethics and morality are not the domain of AI. Humans need to keep a reign on it.
    • New to this forum.  Also looking to tune a 6L80 and trying to work out all the issues in my transmission swap.  I have a 6.2 diesel (1983) and have removed the TH-400 and about to put in a 6L80 with a TCM-2600 interface and don't have a clue what I doing after that.  Did you (Leatherneck/RAV3) get your slip resolved? I too hate to spend that kind of money on a tuner that hopefully I will not need too many times although from what steelerdude15 added about the HP Tuner being great for diagnostics would be a plus.  I am also from WNC but below you in Columbus.  Any helo would be greatly appreciated.
