2020 Rocky Ridge K2 Silverado 5.3L

14K miles

First time posting.

 

Have been expereincing intermittent brake lights staying on after engine shut down for several weeks. Took it to the dealership, who ran a diagnostic on the truck and came back with "all things look normal, no codes". By the time I got home, the brake lights were in a state of constant "on" and I was able to restart the truck without applying the brake, even with the key fob outside the vehicle. Received several Onstar warnings to "Service Parking Brake". The parking brake had engaged and would not release. I disconnected the battery for 20 minutes, reconnected the battery which cleared the code. Called the dealership and was told I would have to leave it with them for awhile (several days to a week) to find out what the issue is. Would be ok except they do not provide a loaner car and rentals are thru the roof in our area ($100/day) so I have been living with this inconvenience until I can find an alternative way to work (80 miles rt).

 

Then this happened over the past weekend:

 

While driving back from the lake with my boat in tow, the truck went into a critical brake failure mode. Here is the series of events.
  1. Moored boat at dock and went to retrieve truck to remove boat from water.
  2. Could not unlock door on truck with FOB. Truck was "dead". No voltage activity.
  3. Used 12v portable jump pack to start vehicle.
  4. Let run for @20 min before proceeding to drive home with boat attached. Check engine light was on for 30 seconds then went out, but no warning dialog boxes.
  5. After we were on the road for @15 min, in rapid succession, I received the following warning dialog boxes:
    1. Service Trailer Brake System
    2. Service ESC
    3. Service Parking Brake
    4. Brake System Failure - 62 MPH Top Speed
    5. Check engine warning light
    6. Traction Control Off warning light
    7. ABS Off warning light
As soon as I saw this, I tried to apply the brakes and they went to the floor. As you might imagine, it was chaotic in the vehicle when it became apparent that the vehicle along with the 6000lbs of Boat/trailer in tow was not going to stop in any timely fashion. Along with the trailer brake failure and vehicle brake reduction, the backup surge brakes on the trailer would not engage due to the lack of quick inertia braking force. I had the pedal to the ground and eventually we came to a stop. The rest of the ride home (2 miles) was a 5mph white knuckle event.
 
The insult to the injury is there has been no warnings, email, text or posted on account from Onstar about this series of events but... I did get one on the same day that my Oil change is due. I am posting the screen shots I took after we came to a stop.

It is being towed to the dealership tomorrow. I will let you know what happens.
 
I absolutely love my truck. It is the 5th Chevy that Ive owned, and sadly the worst one of the bunch.

If I was throwing parts at it, I'd start with the brake switch and a reflash.

Delivered vehicle to dealership @7:30 am. Reviewed issues with intake service personnel and validated that they had received documentation of events and supporting pictures.

Service Advisor called me @ 1:30pm and informed me that they had identified the issue. They retrieved a p25a2 code and proceeded to re-program the BSM per 20-na-073 warranty code 28yn75386417. Had to look this one up. It is a GM Service Bulletin that outlines the Loss of Brake Assist.

I picked up the truck 10 min before they closed (big mistake) and was told that everything had been cleared, the vehicle road tested and was good to go. After gathering my wife, who was eye balling a GMC Sierra, we left the dealership and proceeded home. After @ 5 min, my wife called me (she was following me home) and let me know that my brake lights have been on the entire time since we left and wanted to know if I was riding the brake. I immediately turned around and took it back before I experienced another brake failure. This is now the third time it will be back to the dealership for the same issues. Im exhausted and disgusted with this whole process.

Any suggestions on the next move? Should I start the process for turning this turd into a lemon? How long should I be reasonable about this?

Updated 7/7/2021

Received call from Service Advisor and he stated that they found the issue. The Brake Module needed to be refreshed to relearn the brake pedal position sensor. I went to pick up the truck and when they pulled it up for me, the brake lights stayed on with no one in the truck with the engine still running. WTF!! They drove it back into the shop to rescan it and found no codes. Restarted the truck and the brake lights went off. I decided to drive it home and roll the dice. Stopped at Petsmart for some dog food and brake lights stay off when I turned the truck off. By the second stop (restaurant) the brake lights wouldn't turn off and now it sits in my driveway with the brake lights on till it drains the battery.

 

I am starting the process to lemon this one out. It will go back to the shop for the forth time in less than a month.

 

Has anyone ever been thru the process? I bought the truck new @ 7 months ago.

Called GM's Warranty, Repair and Lemon Law helpline and was given a case number. They will be assigning a Senior Advisor within the next 48 hours that will work with my dealership until this is brought to an acceptable resolution. I will  post updates as this progresses.

I lemon lawed a 2015 Tahoe in Florida, do a Google search for the requirements in Georgia. Have good documentation and all service work orders. Also Google search Lemon Law attorneys, most will get paid when GM settles the case. I did not get much help from GM and I doubt things have changed in the last few years. Good luck and keep us informed.

Did some research and Georgia has 24mo/24K with an extra year to file for arbitration. Also, if it involves critical components or a safety related issue that could possibly endanger the occupants of the vehicle or others, it only has to happen once to qualify for Lemon status and I can bypass the usual 3 attempts to repair. I guess either way, since it has been to the dealership 4 times for this and next week will be number 5, I could file for the status now.

GM has already contacted the Service Advisor and will be discussing with me next week what the process towards resolution will be. I will give GM some time to work it out. Don't really want to give it back and not sure there is a suitable replacement availble in our area.

Will post updates when I get them.

Truck spent two days at dealership and received the following repairs:

Installed 13597422 SL-N-Sensor

Installed 84683650 SL-N-Connector Kit

Brake lights are now staying off when parked and ignition is off. Hope this will take care of the issue.

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
