First time taking my new rig out in the snow.

Very impressive technology.

With traction control, 4x4, Stabilitrak, a limited slip differential, and some aggressive off-road mud terrain tires, the Suburban is unstoppable.

Steep uphill paved road, with compact snow and ice. Several cars parked at the bottom, with others in the ditch on either side. I can stop half way up the hill, and then floor it. The truck takes off up the hill like it was nothing. No way my other 4x4 rigs could do that.

Honestly, its almost disappointing. I'm the guy that looks for the snow so that I can drift the corners, spin tires, do doughnuts, etc. Even when I tried switching to two wheel drive, and turning off the traction control, this thing is still hugs the road better than my other 4x4 rigs.

Tires chains are a joke at this point. Unless it was a perfect sheet of ice, I cant see why chains would ever be needed.

Anyone else experience "too much traction" with these traction features?

LOL, thats a new 1 ! you could try less aggressive tires if you really want to drift that much. I know what you mean tho I enjoy slipping and sliding sometimes too. you would think in 2wd the limited slip would make for a nice drift

From what I was reading, you can turn off the traction control, but the Stabilitrak can not be disabled by a button. I guess you might be able to run a toggle switch to the fuse or something, but then you would throw codes.....

The rig seems to be smarter than I would prefer.

No matter what I did, the vehicle was completely stable, and in control.

Even in 2 wheel drive, they best response I could get was a decreased rate of acceleration, but the rear end was not loose at all. Totally stable. Drifting did not work. You just zip around the corner a little slower than you would in 4x4 mode.

Oh well.

I'm taking the '03 out in the snow next time....

The traction control on the current gen TRD yotas is pretty insane too, none of it is my cup of beer but a great deal can be done with the right software control these days.

You need to be a computer programmer just to drift a corner or do a doughnut these days.....

To turn off traction control, press the traction control button once.

To turn off Stabilitrak and traction control:

Press and hold the traction control button for 5 seconds.

Sheesh. It was in the owners manual.

They should print the words "read the owners manual" on the keys....

I will have to give that a try tomorrow, to see how it does in the snow with that stuff turned off.

From what I'm reading, you can not disable the brake traction control though.

So the ABS will still activate to regulate wheel speed, without touching the brake peddle, even with those other things turned off,

Well guys, the whole idea is to NOT slip and slide.... to get up that hill, tow that barge and lift that bale... I guess when I was younger I did that kind of thing, but in parking lots empty of lighting and parked vehicles... Newer, younger, BRAVER generation! Have fun!

Yeah, what's the worst? In the above pic I won deer if the guy had to pay for the environmental clean up/damage of/to the body of water? That can get really expensive...

before i even saw this, i wondered if that were the case - i know in my corvette if you press and hold the traction control button it puts it in what i think they call "competition mode" where the wheels will spin, but it won't slide back and forth - this was a fun lesson in the rain to see what it actually did.
