Planning on hard wiring my radar detector and dash cam tomorrow.  Figured I would ask quickly on here to see if anyone had done so to interior fuse boxes with add-a-fuse already.  Hoping to hard wire radar detector in driver side box and cam in passenger.  Radar detector on with ignition and cam always on.

 

Anyone know off the top of their head which fuses would work?  Again, figured I'd ask and maybe save some time having to break out Fluke or circuit tester.

 

I think I saw a video on the Ventrue N4 hardwired to a 2020 Silverado, so I may try and find that again as well.

I hardwired my radar detector into my passenger side fuse box with a fuse tap. You have to use a 3 pin fuse depending on which fuse you use.  Don't tap into anything inorganic that the truck needs to operate.  Use a hvac or something simple.

Where are you mounting the radar pickerupper? Do you have power going to your rearview mirror? I tapped the pins for power on the mirror for mine.

Escort Passport 8500.

 

ETA...Just received a new Escort Max360c. Going to pass the 8500 off to the work truck. Served me well. No tickets. Hope newer tech will do the same.

I tapped the pins for the mirror to connect the detector. Going to run a line to the pass side fuse block and try #23 for the camera.

Gen5DIY also sells a P&P harness for detectors. Can get one with a lead for a camera as well but it will be ignition switched (so no parking mode power). I purchased one for my Sierra, couldn't have been easier.

My hardwire kit for my camera required two connectors to be connected to the fuse panel.  It needed a constant hot and something that was switched.  This is so it knows when to go into parking mode. 

 

I used F26 (three prong fuse) which is USB/SEO RAP and F3 (standard fuse) which is the Garage door opener. 

 

There are a number of good options for the three prong fuse.  F11, F32, F43, or F17.  I went with F26 because it was the easiest one for me to get my connector into. 

 

Ones you figure that part out it is quite simple to route cables and tuck them away nicely. 

 

One thing I will warn you about is that there is a TSB out there that hardwired kits seem to cause strange things electronically.  On my truck once in a blue moon I will get a tire sensor not reading.  As soon as I unplug the camera it fixes itself.  I just live with it now.

For anyone else looking for this data, apparently all of the fuses in the driver side fuse panel are always powered.  In order to wire the radar detector I had to run the wire across the headliner, down the driver side A pillar.  Mounted the ground wire behind driver side kick plate and then had to use 18 ga wire to extend the load wire under the dashboard all the way over to the passenger side fuse panel.  Used F20 for seat ventiliation/cooling.

 

So if you have the option to mount the detector below or to the right of the mirror to hide the wires along the passenger side roof and A pillar, it will be much easier.

 

Waiting on the hardwire kit for the Vantrue N4 to show up...but F3 (Universal Garage Door) will be the fuse I use for it.  Was able to find multiple videos to help find what fuse they were using.

And see how that works.

 

I don't have auto-dimming mirror.  Didn't take the mirror cover off to see if the wiring and everything is still there that I could have tapped into anyway.  If I run into any issues or end up needing to re-wire anything down the road I'll keep that in mind.

 

On a side note, trying to figure out how I'm going to mount the rear camera.  Have the sliding rear window, so can't mount it to the window itself.  Trying to find a bracket or something else that might allow me to mount the rear cam to that I could then mount to the trim above the rear window.

 

There is also a tie town point (I assume for child seat) behind the middle head rest that sticks up slightly that I could use, but I would have to imagine that a rear camera will work better mounted at the top of the window than at the bottom.

I wired mine to the passenger fuse box, running the wire along the headliner and down the pillar. There is a free spade terminal that is keyed to the ignition - on when the start button is pressed...when the truck is turned off it stays on until the door is opened. dont even need to occupy fuse location. I wired an inline fuse. Sorry I cant remember exactly which terminal.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
