By all means if you're going to do this get QUALITY jack stands and a jack. You CAN use a bottle jack (so names for it's shape) and safely lift each side one at a time or get a floor jack and lift each end, but always, always always, always, always, always use quality jack stands and use quality tools. If you buy cheap you're gonna buy twice.

I agree but my local NAPA store feels the same as Moog was aquired by some conglomerate and most of the parts are  Chinese junk now

Is the ACDelco Gold bearings good? Its not technically the genuine one, but they are still the same company that makes the genuine one.

 

Also, the other wheel moves when I move it up and down (but not left and right), but the brake caliper and other stuff move with it, and it stops moving at the upper ball joint. This means the wheel bearing for the other wheel is fine right?

do you have it jacked up under the control arm? if so it sounds like the ball joints are worn out. if they are unless you're replacing the control arms you may want to let a shop do them but if you want to try it you can rent the press at the parts store. this is another part you don't want to skimp on as the cheap ones probably won't last a year and even name brand stuff  may only be good for a couple. I got tired of changing mine and am using the best  I could find, heavy duty off road racing supposedly parts.road conditions have a lot to do with how fast they wear, hard braking over rough surfaces is hard on them and here in New England the roads are a mess. if you're not going to grease them don't buy ones with grease fittings, lots of oil change places don't even look for grease fittings anymore and its almost impossible to get at the fittings from 1 of those pits

you may want to change the bearing while you're there if you do the B Js, if 1 was worn out the others probably not far behind

Just replaced both fronts in the wife's GMC with NTN (Japan bearings) loaded in South Korean forged hubs. Sourced from Bumper to Bumper. Just under $600 for the pair. 😱 BUT....Lifetime Warranty on parts, 3 years on labor

If it were me, if you are getting bad up and down movement as well as side to side I would replace both control arms instead of trying the ball joints.  At a minimum you have to rent a ball joint press to do that part if doing the ball joints.  Replacing the control arm is the route to go.  I would do both side control arm and also Wheel hub bearing.  As the other may be on the way out as well.

Here are the tools and parts I have, or I will be getting. Wheel bearing, sockets, ratchets, wrenches, torque wrench, jack, jack stands, WD-40, and a breaker bar. Is there anything else I will need to change the wheel bearings? Would I have to grease anything?

 you should clean and lube the knuckle where the bearing seats so a drill with a wire wheel will help. make sure you clean the mating surface so the new bearing doesn't have a bunch of rust under it. never seize the axle stub. the jobs easier if you disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle and push the axle in as far as it will go. don't use a pickle fork on the tie rod though, just give the knuckle where the tie rod taper is a couple wacks with a hammer and it should pop loose. DO NOT hit the threaded part!

Will I need loctite for anything? Also, I got a 36 mm  socket for the axle nut. Other posts on similar forums said it was either 35 or 36 mm. The 36 mm socket seems to rotate back and forth slightly, but is a six point. It will probably get the nut off fine, but will it lead to inaccurate torque when I put the nut back on?

you could re locktite the 3 bolts but its really not neccesary, just get them good and tight, torque them if you can get a socket on them, you will be ok with the 36, clean the threads and give them a shot of WD

    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up. 
    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
