Been lurking on the Gas HD site for a while now.  Had ordered a new 2022 GMC 2500HD with the 6.6 gas last year, then supplier lost allocation.  Had to wait for a 2023.  I was "hoping" the 2023 HD's would get the new interior.  Doesn't appear like that will happen.  I've been looking at the 2022 interiors and I'm impressed.  I was messing around on GMC's website building a few half tons just for fun.  I saw the LM2 can be had with the Max Tow package that offers a 3.73 rear, better leaf springs, a 9.76" axle (I guess is bigger?) and enhanced cooling.  That seems like a lot for $850.  Then I saw the tow ratings are near 13K!  I was like maybe I should look into a half ton diesel with the kind of mileage I've been hearing.  I am keeping my 2015 LML, I'm just needing to add a second vehicle for my business.  I do occassionally tow heavy so that's why I was looking at the HD gas as I really couldn't justify a second HD diesel.  I'll always keep one diesel around because of the heavy towing I do from time to time, but I don't necessisarily need to tow real heavy with the second pickup, maybe 10-12K.  I know that would tax a half ton even with the tow package but I live in western Kansas where it's flat, no traffic, and towing would be local, just delivering seed/ag products.  We have old GMT 400 half tons at the farm we tow ridiculous weight with sometimes but that's not out on the open roads either.  So are these new half tons with the max tow package kind of like the old 1500HD's?  I know those were 8600 GVWR and it looks like you can spec these new half tons up to 7300, but just wondering if that's where this may be headed.  Anyone on here towed with a new 2022 with the Max Tow?  Leaning towards the 3.0 because of unloaded mileage.  I know the 6.2 is a beast but with premium fuel and a lower unladen mileage I'd rather stick to the diesel as I put on 30-35K a year.

 

I know this is a long post but what are thoughts on a B&W gooseneck hitch in one of these new half tons?  All my trailers are gooseneck 24-26' with 7K axles.  They weigh 5K empty.  Was thinking air bags if I went that route.  I did see that the ratings for gooseneck towing is way lower which doesn't make a lot of sense to me but maybe it's to do with pin weight and axle ratings.  May ultimately end up doing the 2500 but I didn't realize they had bumped the ratings up so high for 2022 on the half tons.  I wish the At4 had the higher tow rating.  That's the model I want.  

 

Any feedback appreciated.

I would buy a used 3500 or 2500 before I tried actually working a 1/2 ton this way.  Tow quality is going to blow.  Airbags will help...LT tires will help...  How much do you care about the tow limits established by the manufacturer? 

 

Depending on the weight of the cargo you might be better served with a tandem axle bumper pull utility trailer.  Big tex has a lightweight trailer with cargo capacity of 5500lbs.

If you want to gooseneck, get a 2500 or 3500.  Not enough payload on a 1500, even with max trailer.

I was looking at getting a bumper pull deckover maybe 20’ or so with the 7K axles if I went half ton. . Looking at the specs on those they only weigh like 3600 lbs empty.  Figured I would load 7-8K in cargo and stay within the tow limits of 13K, but maybe that is not realistic.  I totally see what you are saying an HD would be better suited for towing, but I’m keeping my 2500 this will really be a backup with the potential for some heavier towing locally.  Not running around the country on a 500 mile trip.  I think the mileage with the 6.6 unloaded is gonna be pretty poor but I know the tow experience will be way better.

Just watch your tongue weight....most of your weight is going to be way back by the axles to make this feasible...and you're going to need weight distribution too.  2500-3500 do not have a requirement for a WDH at these proposed weights.

I don't think frame and brakes change with the NHT package. 

IIRC, the 1500HD's did have their own frame.

 

I wouldn't even think of hooking my 1500 diesel to a trailer and load like you're talking about.

My primary reason for 2500's (for the 10 or 12 years I ran them) was also for hauling seed/chem products on a flat deck.  Mostly flat 'here' too, at about 850' asl. 

 

Despite the bump in trailer rating, NHT adds only a small amount to payload. 

 

 

Otoh, the 3.0 is a great little rig for doing all the other things you are likely doing if the heavier towing is seed/chem....

yeah airbags on a 1500 frame overloaded is not smart, neither is the braking power that impressive on the 1500's when compared to hydroboost on a stought 2500

FYI, my 2022.5 3.0 Crew Cab Standard Bed High Country with NHT max tow package has a max payload of ~1480 pounds.

Nope.  Frame is the same.  Higher spring rate, shocks, heavier radiator, 9.76" axle and lower (higher numeric) gearing.  That's what makes up the NHT package.

Lower gearing!  Low gears are higher numerically.

1500HD was built from 2001 thru 2007

They were originally a way to get a crew cab on a 1500

(remember that the 1500 crew/short wasn't introduced until 2004)

Todays max tow (NHT) option is not the same thing as 1500HD was.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
