Traded my 2006 Chevy Silverado other day and got a Nissan Frontier.

The chey has been pretty good overall truck, I bought in 2006 and drove it daily without much issues.

The HVAC had some issues over the last couple of years, upholstery falling down and dry rotted.

Other than that very solid truck

Thanks for all the help and information I got of here

Not knowing the condition of your old truck... most reports I've heard are that the mpgs and performance will be similar, the cabin size smaller and capability less.

Curious how you think they compare.

I guess you missed that it was old and worn out. The new one is well, newer. I have a pristine 02 avalanche. I drive it for nostalgia reasons. It doesn’t compare with the newness of my 16 odyssey. He probably got a good deal.

The Silverado was the better truck when is was newer and less miles for sure...I just wanted something newer, the 5.3 had no issues at all. The Nissan shouldn't have any problem pulling my 16' trailer since I no longer have a tractor..just mowers when they need to go to the shop, 1400 pound is most one of them weights

See you soon after you miss being behind the wheel of one of the General's trucks!

I get old an worn out... but the degree can vary. My question/point/curiosity is what level of old and worn out was required in order for the midsize truck to tip the scales in the OP's favor.

I have a hard time finding the mid size trucks competitive with a fullsize. Because (Not to be offensive but particularly the Frontiers especially aged platform) they deliver less power from their smaller engines with out an appreciable bump in mpg's. Maintenance costs will be the same. Capability will be less payload and towing. Comfort will take a hit via the smaller cabin, and ride quality won't be any better. The only benefit is a lower purchase price and perhaps better maneuverability.

So, I'm curious about the OPs thinking on the matter about what his "pros" for the choice are.

NOT trying to insult someone's new truck or decision, my comments are either what I've heard or experienced on the balance of compact trucks vs. full size.

Also, of note the newer platforms are seeming to provide a better mix of attractiveness compared to a fullsize.

There’s plenty of things to consider. The easiest is the purchaser likes it. Looking up on the net they’re not bad trucks just not as technically advanced. There’re probably cheaper. People do buy them new. I drive an avalanche, basically a suburban. My all time favorite truck. I’m considering a maverick type truck for my next one. I have too many vehicles now for different purposes. Getting older I want to lessen the load. The other consideration is my wife has a hard time getting into a regular truck. Then there’s the cost. You can get a smaller well equipped truck new. The same equipped full sized is 20K higher. The biggest consideration for me is GM trucks after 2006 have cylinder deactivation. No thanks.

Frontier is on my radar. 310 hp V6 is about the same power I have now on E-85. Does not have AFM/DOD and is DOHC. SIDI. Looks pretty sophisticated to me. 9 speed automatic with a good reputation. King cab (2 door) is still available. Woo-Hoo. Weights about the same. Haul is half. Not an issue. Go figure. A half ton limited a half a ton. Amazing. Tow is only a few hundred less. Not an issue. About $20K less. 😱  Much smaller and my 6 foot body won't need to lower the truck or climb a ladder to check the oil. Pretty nice inside and the seat is WAY more comfortable. But that's just me dreaming. By the time Pepper is dead and in the ground I will be too.

This was my conclusion as well after comparing the various models 5 and ten years ago.

I think that’s the point. That’s why the maverick is so popular. Ram is on the verge of doing the same. Maybe GM is paying attention.

They could try something innovative instead of 'me too'.  Ya know, like perhaps perfect a platform instead of terra farming it into the jolly green giant or 'one upping'. Make a great hammer before you make it bigger or add Wi-Fi.

If everyone does it the price should be competitive. I’d love to see a GM version. I almost bought an S-10 V-8 years back. They were just a tad cheaper than a 1/2 ton. The Trailblazer SS was the last great GM deal in my opinion.

Sounds like the OP did what he wanted to do, versus what he needed to do.  Which is of course his prerogative.  More power to him!

As an owner of 2 pickups (my dad passed and now his truck is mine, and I just can't sell it, for sentimental reasons), I was curious if any of the big 3 made a 2023 truck the equivalent of his 2003.  I wouldn't buy a new one, they're grossly overpriced IMO.  But I just like to know what's out there.  In my opinion, what's available now is just crap.  Big margin hunting crap.

My dad's 2003 is a 4.8L SCSB 2WD 4-speed auto.  So, it's maybe the smallest full size truck that can be had with a V8.  I wanted to know if the same existed now, and in particular with a manual transmission instead of an automatic.  The answer is NOPE.  As far as I could find, you can't get a manual transmission in any truck now, 1500, 2500 or 3500.  There is no standard cab offered any longer.  The smallest cab is whatever Ford calls their cab that has a little space behind.  Something like a king cab.  I can't remember this for sure, but I think it was even difficult to find a 2WD truck.

Based on that, do you think I'll sell my dad's pink unicorn?  Nupe.  I may make sort of a sport truck out of it.  Already started.  I've got it running good now and the rear dropped with shackles, level with the front.  It may be just a touch higher in the rear, but much more level.  But I won't go overboard on the 'sport' truck changes.

Anywho - I can't say I agree with the OP's move, but it is his prerogative.  My dad was like that.  He wouldn't NEED a new car or truck.  He would want one, but felt like he had to come up with excuses like, the truck is making weird noises, I'm afraid it's about done, etc etc etc.  I told him one time, you've raised a family well, you've been a diligent worker and God fearing.  If you want a new truck / car, you've earned it, go get it.

    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it.
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29.
    • Any grease on the stud threads of any kind?   Wheel studs should have NOTHING on them for proper torquing and so the nuts don't back off.     Are all of the mating surfaces clean?  So wheel, rotor and hub?     We've had plenty of trucks at work with that wheel, this is a first to me.  Makes me think they've got a lube tech putting anti-seize on all the wheel studs or some kind of grease, and they need to stop doing that.  To have 11 other trucks with the same exact problem.
    • I was a Chevy guy for years, then switched to GMC because I liked the looks better.  I'm actually thinking I like the Chevy looks better than GMC for the first time in a lot of years.   One thing I know for certain, the new GMC dash is hideous!  Chevy wins this one!
