Flapper valve, remove with muffler?

I want to remove my muffler. If you've done this, did you remove the flapper valve or not? Did you end up with drone either way?

Are you sure you want to remove your muffler? Maybe think about replacing it with something that makes a nice rumble or even a nice roar. I am not an "Ole fart" yet but I am getting there. There are many many postings on here about Borla, Corsa and others. There have been several people who have posted on here who have removed their mufflers who regretted it. I personally just had a high flow glass pack muffler installed and the flapper valve cut out. Cost me $159.00 at The Wonderful Muffler Man. Just did this to my new Trail Boss 5.3L. I am not saying this is the right thing for you but I am saying you should do some research. 

Just by posting on this subject you are going to get a sh*t ton of replies and suggestions.

There is sound and there is noise. Factory exhaust is neither. I get it. Problem is most aftermarket exhausts are nothing but noise. Loud obnoxious noise.  Some may believe this is a matter of taste or personal preference. Maybe. 

 

Let me ask this. Is the system you are choosing something you lean into to listen to like music or cringe from like a howling baby. How about your neighbor? If you think that shouldn't matter, then you won't mind him running a jackhammer outside your bedroom window at 3am if HE likes the sound. 

 

We, Mrs. Bear and I, had a diesel go by us today with a muffle delete. We had our windows down and it was PAINFUL. 

 

As hard as a nice system is to put together that both I and my neighbors will find pleasant, I've left mine stock.  

 

Stock was not an option in this survey so.......

Don't have neighbors so that's not an issue. However I would like something louder than stock but not obnoxious by any means. I'm headed out to my own muffler man in the morning and will see what he suggests. FWIW the youtube videos I've watched seem to indicate that the muffler delete, while leaving the cats and stock resonators in place results in something that is close to what I'm after.   ???

On my 14 GMC with three cats and a resonator (a small glass pack) the muffler delete sounded like it had a performance muffler. After putting exhaust on every vehicle I owed since I was 17 (a lot) I finally grew tired of the noise. I even sold my hot rod truck. But after all I was 60. As far as hearing your cylinders shut down, I’m sure you will, it’s sound after all. People say there’s after market exhaust that masks that. I haven’t experienced that. Ultimately if you have an exhaust shop try it, you can always go back. I did.

That is exactly what I'm looking for. A growl, not a roar. Or a whisper.

I cut out my muffler, kept the valve, have no drone. BUT, i also have one of the 22 models that did not have the 4-cyl mode

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against exhaust modification for sound. Just make it sound pretty

Have an appt. for next Tuesday morning to do a muffler delete. If that doesn't please me I'll probably go with a Magnaflow muffler.

I was in your shoes with my truck last fall. I went with the Borla S-Type exhaust because it's their "medium" loudness exhaust. It is exactly what I was looking for. Nice noticeable rumble when normal driving, no drone, and a nice growl when I stand on it. My only slight gripe would be when I cold start it, it is very loud until it idles down to normal. Just an FYI if you don't like your muffler delete.

I think I'm going to go with a Magnaflow, either an 18 or a 14. There's a channel on youtube that compared all of the magnaflows they carry and the 18, which is what my muffler guy recommended sounded pretty good to me. I may change my mind when I bring my truck in and go with a 14 then but it will depend on what he says about it. He's been doing exhaust work for 25 years and has helped me with other vehicles in the past. I trust his judgement. Bottom line is I want louder but not obnoxious, and zero drone in the cabin.

I also need to get his opinion on the flapper in combination with the particular muffler I settle on.
