Anyone else on here been hit with the Transfer Case Seal Leak on their 2024? I just took mine to the dealer to have something else check and during their complimentary inspection they found my transfer case seal was seeping a little. Not a full on leak, but something they wanted to fix. The part is on backorder and they are not sure when they will get it. At 5,000 miles I was only down a 1/2 quart of fluid.

 

I'm not that familiar on transfer cases, but what should I be looking out for while I'm still driving it? I have a two week hunting trip coming up and want to make sure I'm not stranded.

How many miles will you travel on your hunting trip? You have 1/2 a quart lost in 5k miles if it doesn't get worse.

Less than 500 miles most likely. Hopefully the part comes in within 2-3 weeks.

transfers the truck from 2wd to 4wd.....squirt some extra fluid in their for your trip if your concerned......super simple

Had my truck (24’ Silverado 2500HD gas CCSB) on the lift changing out the rear diff fluid. Found my transfer case is leaking. Nothing major, but don’t like a few month old truck leaking fluids. Truck has 7200 miles on it. 

 

P.S. I was changing the rear diff fluid because it was about a quart low when I checked during the 1000 mile initial service. I added a quart of 75w-90 mystik synthetic to top it off. Didn’t want mixed fluid in the rear end long term.

You bringing the truck in to the dealer? Good luck. Sure have a lot of leaky 24's rolling around

gm is sounding like the good ole days of the gm 2-stroke Detroit Diesel!

 

Fill the oil and check the fuel. 😁

Based what folks are reporting here, the transfer case may have been under filled at the factory, so your fluid loss in 5000 miles may have been much less than the 1/2 quart.

The output shaft seal was bad so that was replaced, but about a week later it was leaking again where the two sides are matted together on the main transfer case unit. It's going back in on Monday to be checked again.

They've been having problems with the seals between the transmission and t-case since the 2020s came out.  Its a stupid design seal setup they went to.  Seems to only be affecting the 10 speed trucks.

Here's the PI they have on the seal on the T-case side and how as of 2022 they are engineering a special tool for installing the seal to the proper depth.  MC-10201286-9999.pdf (nhtsa.gov)

 

Both seals on either end have to be installed at a certain depth point on both components.  I wouldn't be shocked if its a misalignment issue going on during component assembly so transmission or T-case, or they are having an alignment issue during powertrain assembly so when the t-case is being mated to the transmission as they want to make sure the bolt sequence is followed when installing the t-case.

Note: The cavity between the Transmission and Transfer Case is a wet cavity by design.  The Transfer Case Input Shaft Seal is a double seal to prevent fluid transmission and transfer case fluid from intermixing with each. If either side of the seal leaks fluid will leak from the weep holes between the Transmission and Transfer Case.

 

Note: It is being reported that the t-case input seal may be installed backwards, as a two piece seal back to back, and the replacement seal may also come as two seals to be installed. Correct orientation if two seals are received is metal clad together, which may be rubber coated, garner springs need to facing opposite of each other, one spring facing the t-case input gear, and one spring facing towards the trans output shaft, additionally, each seal may have three tabs, one seal protruding tabs, and the other inverted tabs, those tabs are to be aligned for proper installation.

Well, looks like I'm going back for a 3rd time for the transfer case leak. I think I need to start finding a new dealership for repairs. It just sucks the next closest one is an hour away. The rate I am going, I'll be able to claim Lemon Law soon.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O. 
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
