My neighbor has a 2014 1/2 ton with a dead 5.3l engine in it and is infatuated with my truck and engine.  His question to me is will the 6.6 directly bolt into his truck meaning motor mounts and up to his transmission?  I'm not sure what trans he has and neither does he.  He is aware he will need to source an ECU for it but doesn't want to mess with a bunch of adaptor plates for the trans nor the motor mounts.  Is this a possible direct swap?

Well, its a Gen 5 small block to a Gen 5 small block...

It "might" even run on the existing ECM but need some solid tuning to make sure it works.

Motor mounts.  If the block side has the same existing bolt pattern, those would bolt right up.

The front end of the engine is different a good bit though, so he'd have to either get some custom radiator hoses or see if a 14-19 water manifold will bolt up in place of the 6.6's water pump.

I'd say the biggest hurdles will be will all of the existing wiring connectors for everything to the engine be the same or not.  Ideally I'd think using his existing harness is the move to make as long as it all plugs in.  Also, transmission.  Its gonna need some beefing to at least 6.2 spec (so 6.2 converter) but I'd go further and build it to handle more.

Thank you sir.  I will pass this info along to him.  But what a great mod for other 1/2 ton owners if it's not a giant pain in the....well you know.

I know there are few guys that have done this swap already a few different forums. I think performancetrucks.net and hptuner forums had stuff on it. A few things have to swapped like said above with the water pump, get a better converter and not much else has to be done.

So a little background here too on this man.  He's a hard working humble man ok?  Total family man and a great neighbor that is wanting to bring his truck back to life with I'm guessing as little expenditure as possible. So if this sounds like a very expensive possible swap?.....I'll let him know because in all honesty he's probably better off finding a "newer" 5.3 from a totalled vehicle in my opinion.  Total swap out.  But he was curious as I was too.  Thank you all for your advice and knowledge.  I will be sure to pass it along to him tomorrow.

He might also want to upgrade his springs in the front.  The 6.6L iron block is a fair bit heavier than the 5.3L aluminum block.

With everything you all are telling me I really don't see this happening.  I'll help him if he wants to find another 5.3.  I do appreciate everyones input here.

I think this might be a great upgrade to a half ton....IF....you have the money to make it happen.  But having a half ton with the 6.6 I do believe would be a great start to many fun times and memories!

Would be an awesome project and definitely doable. I'm seeing L8T's with harness, pcm, and transmission going for reasonable prices on Craigslist and FB marketplace lately. Not that I've been considering that swap with a vortech in an older truck 🤔 😳

I wish I had the time and his truck for my own.  I think it would be a fun as hell project.  I know how the L8T moves my heavy ass truck around unloaded and that is surprisingly great.  It would be fun as hell to see how it moves a half ton around....lol...perhaps I could convince him to sell it to me....yeah, probably not.

This will never happen. The money alone would not make it worth it. He will end up in a completely different truck.

I agree if it's not a total swap of which I can't believe it would be.

Rebuild the 5.3 with a full AFM delete and tune would be cheaper/easier. Add a decent enough cam and exhaust and you could close the HP gap a bit too.

Your advice is sound.  Problem is money!  He's trying to source one from a junkyard with low miles on it as cheap as possible.  Initially he was fascinated with the idea of the 6.6 but after I informed him what newdude wrote he quickly changed his mind.  I'm thinking there might be an overall knowledge barrier there too, he can change an engine but I'm not sure he has the knowledge to really dig into one like you're suggesting.  Great advice though but I'm sure you know where he and I are coming from.  I hate it that so many people out there are barely scraping by.
