New '24 Silverado 1500 WT CC owner - USB ports question

Recently (a week ago) crossed to the dark side (I owned numerous F150's for many decades) and got my new ride at local Chevy dealer. Very basic truck with the 2.7L 4-banger that fits my needs (it does have the WT Value Pkg). Standard equipment is Chevy Infotainment 3 system with 7" screen/bluetooth audio streaming/wireless Android/Apple Carplay (it's not SiriusXM capable), and 2 x USB ports (1 x USB-A, 1 x USB-C). I've got both the roof-mounted shark-fin antenna AND the conventional AM/FM radio antenna on pax side. 

 

I'm not tech-savvy and have been trying to understand capabilities of the USB ports. Namely, are they charge-function only (for phone, etc), or can I use one of them for playing off a memory stick with songs ripped from my numerous old CD's. The owner's manual hasn't been a lot of help. I'm thinking that they probably are charge-only because when I go into Infotainment Home screen/Audio, only devices choices shown are AM/FM/Bluetooth (no USB, no Aux). Remember this is a basic WT truck.

 

Before I go and spend a lot of time ripping CD's onto a big memory stick only to find I can't use it - can anybody smarter than me set me straight? Anybody else out there with a new 23/24 WT able to use one of their USB ports for audio even if Home/Audio screen doesn't show a USB device option?

IMO plug it in and try it.

Its not charge only because Apple CarPlay/Android Auto function via USB (and also wirelessly).  

 

On the radio page on the screen.  Do you have a selection under AM/FM/Bluetooth that says "more"?

According to the manual, all trims / radios should be able to access music files on USB drives. I would go with either 16GB or 32GB drives as that's large enough to hold "a lot" of music files and small enough to be supported by most vehicles.

The USB ports in your '24 Silverado 1500 WT CC should indeed support more than just charging. You should be able to play music off a memory stick with songs ripped from your CDs. It's strange that you're not seeing a USB device option on the Infotainment Home/Audio screen.

Here's a quick workaround you can try: even if the USB option doesn't show up on the main screen, plug in your memory stick and navigate to the source or input menu on your infotainment system. Sometimes, the USB playback option is nested in there.

I've had a similar setup in my WT truck, and it took a bit of poking around to figure out all the features.

Thanks to all that replied. I spent a fair amount of time searching through all Chevy online website and owners manual info regards the Infotainment system trying to a definitive answer to 'are the 2 x instrument panel USB's charge only or both charge/data for my WT trim crewcab?" and I kept striking out.

 

I finally had my 'aha' moment when I found the 2024 Chevy truck online order/reference guide with RPO info:

Model Information - Online Ordering Guide (gm.com) This info is a god-send, glad I found it.

 

So my specific '24 WT CC does have/should have USB ports that are both charge and data - under both Standard Equipment and Ordering Info/Interior (shown below), it's RPO code UBJ:

So, even though when I go into Audio and don't see USB listed for some strange reason, it should be able to recognize a USB device (according to GM). So if I can't get it work then it's probably either (a) operator error (most likely(, or (b) equipment (USB) fault/defect. I'll keep trying.....

Page 160 of the owner's manual.. There is no distinction from one trim to the next and the statement "Ports may also be used for charging" is they key that they are all data capable...

Thanks. I'd seen this in the OM too. I was reading it literally - 'The vehicle MAY be equipped with multiple USB ports'....or maybe not. 'Music MAY be played from a connected USB device'....or maybe not. Now I know that on my WT CC the instrument panel USB's (standard equip.) are both charge and data. I don't have rear USB ports in my truck (because it doesn't have the KI4 RPO option), but if it DID have rear USB ports they're evidently charge-only.

Right.. you're reading it as "you might have ports with data" and "it might work" but the intent is more "You may have multiple ports" (instead of just one) and "you have the option of using these ports to play music from a supported drive".

 

GM writes documentation about as well as they write software...

I have a 2024 Silverado and it won't play music from a USB drive. This drive worked fine on my 21 Colorado.

I even bought a 3.0 drive and put 4 songs on it but still no music.  The songs flash by one by one and this just

keeps repeating. When i press stop this stops and when i hit play the songs just keep flashing on the screen

and it say now playing but no music.  GM is/was no help even after 3 calls. The dealer is also no  help.  Any thoughts?

If you are seeing the song names, that tells me that the drive itself is working, it has an appropriate size and filesystem, and the information is 'visible' to the media player. The fact that it's essentially attempting to load and then immediately skipping each song tells me that there might be a problem with the way the content is encoded. 

 

Where did these music files come from and what is the extension on the filenames?

@Marcd  Not sure it matters in your case, but what file system format is your USB device.   I have about 3,000 songs on my USB in a 2024 Silvy. No issues.

I did not have any small USB devices laying around so I had to partition my USB to get a partition size small enough to work with the File System the truck needs.

I copied them from my Mac Laptop in itunes. I don't know the format but everything worked in my Colorado.

Even when only 4 songs are on a new flash drive the same thing happens.  I will look to see if i can tell what file 

system they are or extension.

Found the info

 

Apple lossless audio file

21.4mb (one song)

bit rate 957

Sample rate 44.100khz

sample rate 16bit

Apple mpeg 4 audio

AIFF-C audio

 

but like i said the drive worked in my old colorado and the owners manual  states nothing about any type or file.

I'm having the same issue on my 24 Silverado with the USB drive that worked fine in my 16 Silverado.

      My centre console USB ports haven’t been working and the one in the glovebox is starting to act up. When I plug my phone into the cord the radio will go black and stop playing, and the CarPlay is inconsistent.   I checked the fuses and they were fine. I changed the USB port out and still nothing. Hoping for some advice on what I should be looking at.

      The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.

      I have four that read by the dash 8 to 10% better than miles/pump calculations and I have one that is spot on.
