I took my truck in for the first oil change that is free from Gm. Dealership changed it at 5255 miles. I’m at 10037 now and I change my own oil this time so I drain the oil then pull the oil filter. Oil filter was overly tight. I noticed it was a parts master oil filter. Where is the GM filter? I called the dealership and they said they were out of original oil filters that day. I asked him why did you change it then. Why didn’t you reschedule! He had no answer.

Very bad deal. Do we have to double check everything now?

I don't really see a problem. The dealership is using a part that is allowed by GM more than likely and will still cover the warranty if anything happened.

AC Delco filters aren't the king of the castle either, they aren't any more special than so many other filters on the market.

GM had a hard time getting certain oil filters some time ago. Dealers had to use what they could get.

While I was at the dealer getting the oil changed I bought 4 oil filters and 2 air filters to keep in stock at my shop. I also bought 10 drain plug gaskets to keep in stock. The very same day this was done. They had 18 oil filters on hand. The service writer doesn’t know I had purchased these parts because after the first one I would be servicing my truck. I’ve been a tech for 30 + years. Also what I didn’t mention in the first post was how tight the drain plug was. Suppose to be 18 ft/lbs. there is no way that way 18 more like 30-35 bad for aluminum treads

Called three service mangers at three different dealerships. All agreed that it is suppose to be gm filter and gm oil for first oil change. No one said ac delco was king! Did they use super tech oil from Walmart as well???? Oil filter way to tight, drain plug way to tight, non oem oil filter with a sub par media for filtration, now I wonder about the oil. Cheapest ****** they could find in 55 gallon drum. It’s the point that gets me. GM did the free oil change for a reason. Not just  be nice to you. By the way . There are a difference in filters in the media that is in the filter for filtration. So not all filters are the same.  I’m not trying to be argumentative but I’ve been in these dealerships and I know what gos on. I bet you they billed gm for an original ac delco filter and gm dexos oil. I would never put a parts master filter on my truck. If I knew they were going to do all that. I would have just changed it myself and saved everybody the trouble. There’s no harm done and your right in a way but it’s just sneaky to treat it like it was a cheap trade in vehicle on this brand new engine. When I take a vehicle to a dealership I assume I’m getting oem parts. I know people are going to disagree with me and that’s ok. Everybody has there way of doing things. I just feel this was sneaky and cheap. This is why I left the dealerships.

If you knew all this ******, stop being cheap and change your own oil in the first place! I didn't use the "free" oil change because I had bought my first new vehicle from this same dealer back in 2000, an S10 Xtreme with the 4.3 V6. I did the first oil change with them and when I went to change it myself the next time, they had used the shorter 2.2 4 cylinder filter and not the proper filter for the 4.3. I wasn't going to chance it with this truck that was about 2.5x the cost of my S10, so I did a short oil change at 1,028 miles. If you were that worried about keeping your new truck in the best shape, then you should know it's best to do a first oil change between 500-1000 miles. I was told by the service rep when I went in for a "low oil pressure" light that came on that I would need to provide receipts for oil and filters and not just records of when I changed it. Seems GM is looking for a way out of warrantying any and everything it can.

Dealer is under NO obligation to use GM parts.  They often make more money sourcing cheaper parts locally while GM pays them GM prices.  Its very common practice.  Why don't customers realize this?  The dealer is not your friend, all you are is a $ sign to them.   They will substitute anything they want, 99 out of 100 customers won't even pay attention.

Some auto parts stores sell fleet oil filters, you buy them by the dozen. But you have to ask for them. I used them for years on a 93 C1500 350 V8. 3k OCI's. Used them on Honda's also, 3k OCI's. Back then they were about $2 a filter, this type filter is used at oil change shops like Quick Lube.

A quick search on the web seems to indicate these filters are made by Wix. They even have an oil with their brand supposedly made by Valvoline.

There's been lots of issues with GM and getting restock on oil filters.  This was likely the reason why there wasn't one on your truck.  We had to do it about 2 months ago in an emergency as not only was GM not sending oil filters like they said they would, but our local ACDelco distributor was cleaned out of certain filters as well.

No need to overreact over an oil filter.
