I believe there’s mental illness. I recently saw a segment that because there was a few bad mental health facilities, they went after all of them. Creating a shortage. Leaving them to the streets. I believe there are hobos. A chosen life. Few but there’re out there.

I moved out of my parents house the summer before starting my senior year of high school. I worked full time and went to school full time from 10th  grade, got my first job in 8th grade. Like many of us, nothing was given to us.

I had a car, a studio apartment and a job.

I have worked hard for many years like many of us to get where I'm at so I have no sympathy for the homeless.

You didn’t do drugs or have debilitating mental condition. Reagan put the mentally ill back on streets when he shut down large facilities that were local.

Oh, ok Regan did it. Probably with help from Trump. Ever notice it’s the worst in blue states. Nasty trick.

Don't blame Reagan for de-institutionalization, it started in the mid-50's with the introduction of Thorazine and other potent anti-psychotics. Ronnie was still acting and not involved in politics or pharmaceutical science in that time frame to my knowledge, so a little research on your part is warranted.

I shared this post with my wife and she thought it could be one that I wrote!  The details all describe my history except the last comment changed for me over the past year.  I think others have a point regarding how we currently deal with mental illness.

My mom worked for public health nursing. It was shut down under the first Reagan admin.
Man,  where do you get your info?

I believe in small government. I believe housing the mentally challenged falls under public safety. I think it should be handled privately with grants. I’ll pay for that through my taxes. Just like I would and do pay more for products assembled in the USA.

I don’t think it matters what state. Every city from medium to large has the problem. I quit going to ball games in Houston. After the game we came out just about every vehicle had flat tires. Somehow my truck didn’t. It was in an expensive lot. Just across from the stadium is the bad part of town. That was 5 years ago. It’s a shame, a great stadium. I refrain from dark driving. Especially in cities.

My opinion, Reagan new the mentally ill wouldn't be in his neighborhood when he stopped the grants.

Deinstitutionalization - Special Reports | The New Asylums | FRONTLINE | PBSCycles of reform in the history of psychosis treatment in the United States

A couple of deeper reads than Wikipedia, but if one takes the time to read them, a reasonable person would come to the conclusion that in the larger scheme of things that Reagan had very little to do with the problem.

Yesterday I got the call with a date for my shoulder replacement.  In less than two weeks, I'll be convalescing!   My research tells me that recovery varies considerably and I am motivated to strive for a fast return to normal!  I am too busy to take time off from retirement!!
