You got my curiosity up, so I used the phone app and checked my plan.

 

I've used 12 GB of data in the 14 months I've owned it - so a little less than 0.5GB per month.

It came with 72 GB plan across up to 36 months

@redwngr Not sure what you are getting at?  You are referring to phone data correct?  As far as I know, the 2024 trucks will not run the "GM map' which is google and the posted speed limit sign functions off your phone data. You need Onstar data to do that.
 

What I guess I am not sure about is I think you can Android Auto Maps (which is better in my opinion) and it pulls data from the phone.  Could be totally wrong on that.  If that's the case then its really only the posted speed limit sign functionality you are losing without a data plan.

 

Not sure what years are like this.

You got my curiosity up about how much data I was using in the first 14 months of ownership.

 

After looking it up I though there might be some that would be wondering how much or little data some of us are using.

 

I use google maps sometimes -- but usually with my phone connected -- not sure if this means the traffic update info is from the phone or the truck. 

I use SiriusXM a little -- usually I'm listening to local FM instead.

Don't use the other online apps at all.

OK,  gotcha. 

I might have confused you when I said I bought as much data as I could get with my rewards. I wasn't very clear.

I did not mean a lot of data in gigabytes. What I meant was I signed up for the cheapest plan I could get by with for as many months as my rewards would buy. Basically my rewards will buy me a little less than a year of data.

Onstar used to have a plan where you could buy X amount of gigabytes of data which was not based on time.  It was cheap. I bought a certain amount and it lasted about 2 years :)

I would probably not even be concerned about the posted speed limit feature but with the HUD its actually quite nice.

Its just frustrating that you buy a truck with a $69,800 MSRP and in 1 month some of the features stop working unless you spend more money. At minimum a new vehicle should come with 12 months of complimentary Onstar.

So true.  These trucks are pricey enough without having to pay monthly for the nice features it came with. We bought our Sierra SLT about a month ago and love it.  It's a big step up from our 2017 Canyon Denali.  Until I saw this thread I didn't realized some of the functionality I'd be losing after a month of ownership.  I have no interest in the traditional OnStar offerings but the functionality of the maps and the features of the infotainment screen are very nice and I wanted to keep them.  After looking into it I purchased the prepaid data plan for 2 years at $380.  Not cheap but a lot better than $25 a month.  We like Sirius/XM and use them it in all our vehicles so we'll transfer the Sirius/XM from the Denali to the Sierra.

The only reason you can do that is you live in Texas , hell i dont see many gmt-800 trucks on the road these days, more so passing by in junk yards then driving around.

There’s tons of them. Old clean Fords too. I figured I have a better chance of hitting a jackpot gambling than getting a new truck to 200K miles. Since I retired 11 years ago I hit several jackpot’s. And my avalanche is close to 200K miles.

Like appliances, i just do not think any manufacturer makes their cars or trucks last today and by design. Still i can probably count on one hand the amount of 800 series trucks i see per week in my area and any that i do are pretty spent. The 900's are almost as bad as the body on them love to rust out it seems, the stuff they now spray on the roads here literally just eats the vehicles back into the earth.

Honestly my truck is a personal vehicle. I treat it like my collector vehicles I had over the years. The vehicles I use for our trips since I retired are cycled through every two years. New or used. The only reason it isn’t a truck is because my wife can’t get in and out of them very easily. So my retirement truck a 2014 GMC was traded in for a 2015, Santa Fa, then a 2017 Camry, a 2015 CRV the mother in law quit driving. And I swapped it to my daughter for the odyssey a 2016 that I’m just going past one year with. Will it pass two years? My family is betting no. My 2002 Avalanche will probably last me until I die. I like the style and simplicity of it. I don’t drive it in bad weather. Usually what happens a family member needs a car. That’s my excuse to get another.

Getting back to the topic of this thread, I went from a 2017 Silverado Midnight Edition SLT Crew Cab (5.3L) to a 2020 LT Trail Boss Crew Cab with the 6.2L and the biggest difference to me was the size of the new truck vs the old one....simply put its big!  I've attached a picture to show the difference.  I had some reservations with the 6.2L but after talking to other owners of these trucks and SUV's equipped with this engine, I came to the same conclusion as them as this is the best engine by far in a GM 1500 series truck and will never go back to the 5.3L.  As it stand now, these T1XX trucks are the best ones GM has made so far, curious to see what the next generation of these trucks will be like.

How are you liking the (southern ontario) extra cost for the premium fuel to feed the 6.2?

The engines in the 900 trucks love to eat oil, and I am guessing many are dead.

Granted the cost of using premium fuel is a bit of a PITA here in Southern Ontario.  Comparing the cost of premium (6.2L) vs regular (5.3L) for a typical fill up is roughly a $25-$35 difference which isn't too bad.  A full tank for me averages about two weeks as most of my driving is local with some out of town trips.  I've been working on reducing my fuel costs by using credit cards that give me a discount at the pump, and doing various upgrades to my truck.  I just upgraded to GM Spec Borla Catback Exhaust that so far has increased my fuel range.  A cold air intake is next on the list.  Now on the extreme side of things I've been getting offers from my local GM dealers to trade this truck for a new 2024, thus if I went that route then I would go for a 3.0L Duramax (ZR2, AT4, or High Country).

New guy here...also just bought my first GMC truck.....24 Sierra SLT......so I gotta ask, what does K2 and T1 mean??

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
    • It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.
