Traded my 2022 SLT with the 6.2 for a new 2025, exact same spec. Fingers crossed I guess.

 

On the new one though I hear significantly more wind noise at highway speed in the cabin. Anyone else experience this? Dealer tells me its normal, we even drove another band new one with same spec and it had the same issue.

 

But it's def more wind noise than my 2022, and more than any other car I remember. Doesn't sound right at all to me.

So sorry to hear this, but it figures. It's so disappointing what's happened to GM. They're just lousy at making these trucks comfortable to drive. It almost seems like they think gadgets and amenities make up for lack of ergonomics, comfort and noise. I know it's a different chassis, but my 2000 Suburban was SO much more comfortable than my 22 Sierra Denali. And, that Suburban gave me no major problems, although it did drink oil. But, even so, I sold it with 235k miles on it, and the buyer was thrilled at the condition of it. All my friends had older trucks that, even though they weren't as luxurious as the new ones we all have now, felt more robust or something. I can't put a finger on it, but I find myself worrying more about something going wrong with my Sierra more than I ever did with my Suburban, my 93 Vette, and the 2001 vette i still have. I seriously wonder if Mary Barra changed the culture to one that thinks more bells and whistles means more comfort, when in reality wind noise, vibrations, and seemingly little things like visibility (aka blind spots); omission of windshield eyebrow tint (resulting in way more heat in the cabin on hot days even with the a/c on full blast); omission of rear door handle unlock buttons; cheap, noisy, pop-up fabric sunroof wind deflectors, and the like all detract from what once was the best in the business. Spending a little more time on ensuring wind noise is suppressed and addressing the vibrations alone would make for a much more comfortable ride and attract more of the luxury buyers, since these trucks are already in the luxury price range, but are nowhere near as comfortable as true luxury.

 

Ironically, my truck has been serviced at multiple dealerships, and when I voiced concern about something that isn't quite the way it's supposed to be, more than once the response has been "... it's not a Lexus." Makes me wonder if that's what they are taught to say! Darned right it's not a Lexus, because if it was, it would have been cheaper, price-wise, and designed and  assembled with better attention to detail.

 

We always boast about how things made in America are of better quality, yet you just bought a new 2025 truck from the company whose CEO said just the other day in an interview that these trucks are their strongest earners, but you have excessive wind noise? Unbelievable!

Update.

 

We have our first victim since the recall started.  2024 LT Trail Boss with just over 20,000mi.  

 

The repair order stated that they were driving, check engine light came on and reduced power message.  They pulled over and the truck shut off.  It was towed in yet strangely enough, no engine codes like the P0016 the recall has you look for.  It had a code for transmission lost park. 

 

So...with that transmission code, the tech working on it (one of our best guys) found a TSB for the code and ordered a transmission valve body for it.  Fast forward a couple weeks since its been sitting out back, one of the writers had to move the truck as we needed to access something behind it.  He went to start it and "click".  Grabbed two different jump boxes and still "click".  Comes back inside "I don't think its the transmission, I think the engine is locked".  

Next day, the tech goes out and re-scans the truck, still the one transmission code.  Me and the writer were talking about it and I agreed with him it was the engine, and that code only set because the truck couldn't shift to park properly.  Why???  Because it has the electronic shifter (console shift) and when those trucks with the console shift lose engine power, the transmission loses hydraulic pressure and hydraulic pressure is required to shift in and out of park on these.  If its cable shift, you can shift it no issue with the engine off and key on.  We tell the tech this, he was sort of skeptical.  So he took a breaker bar out and tried to bar the engine over. 

 

Well, guess what wouldn't rotate?  He then took the oil filter off and we cut it open.  And sure as $hit...forbidden glitter all throughout the filter.  The oil was metallic black/dark gray.  Best part?  The truck has the recall listed as "Incomplete" status, so didn't even have the recall opened for that VIN yet.  Needless to say, there's an engine on order now.........

Nah, that's just stupidity and ignorance talking.  

 

But also, when you converse with or know people who work at other brands in the industry, you quickly learn how all this crap is not brand specific, especially over the last 10 years or so.

So, in reality, this had nothing to do with the recall inspection itself, so we still don't know if the inspection really works to detect a problematic engine BEFORE it goes kaput, right?

This one went boom before it even had the recall opened to even get tested.  So this one "potentially" COULD have been caught before it failed, but it didn't because GM didn't open the recall for the VIN yet.  

 

Sad because I've yet to see one fail the test yet.  We have a good idea based on the test that there is a 15-20dB swing in sound where these pass the test.  I think between 50-70dB is where the ones we had done tests on that passed.  So at 2000rpm which is computer controlled by the test they exhibit sound picked up by the test sensor in that range so far that we've seen.  It picks up like 3 or 4 signals that its listening to, all of those are within 0-5 dB of each other.  I'd gather that a fail has to be somewhere over 70db?  Maybe 80+?  But again, we haven't had one fail the test to see where the sound recordings are at.

I'd like to know if a motor, that the owner hasn't experienced an issue with, ever gets replaced based on the results of the test, you know what I mean? In fact, I haven't heard of any that have been, not even in the media.

I put Napa 5w-30 in mine as I'm doing several tests with speed diagnostix/lake speed jr.  the 40 weight barely passes the viscosity to be 40 and the valvoline 30 holds the viscosity better and has better additives than the mobil 1, allegedly, specifically the molyb.  soon as a put the 5w-30 in, it went nearly silent.  20w oil is a GM game to run the thinnest possible oil to get every .1mpg they can across 800,000 vehicles because it reduces their fines raising their fleet mileage.  as an owner, i don't give a flying ____k about MPG, i want it to last.  I towed 6500lb 30ft travel trailer with the yukon packed to the gills into the adirondacks and that 5w-30 we will see how it test out.

Why is it your dealership knows what to do and how to do it, but the dealer I bought my truck from and is the largest Chevy dealer in west Michigan doesn't have any instruction from GM on what to do and I have to just wait?

Noticed the same thing on my L84. 5w30 Valvoline. Amazing how quiet the engine is. So much for the "loud gdi injectors".

 

Changed the 0w20 out at 500 mi. It`s got 6200 on it now. No problems. Even on the one day here when it was 4 degrees here.

Is the recall listed as incomplete for your VIN still?  If so, then they can't do the recall yet for your truck until it opens.

If this is indeed true, I wonder why you have dealers pestering folks about bringing in their truck for the recall. One of my local dealers reaches out via phone, email and text every few weeks trying to get me to come in. Yet the status according to the NHSTA for mine is Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available

I'm sort of waiting on the sidelines for now to see how this unfolds

So far, I've only received one notice in the mail saying my truck was affected by the recall and that I would be notified what to do when parts are available.  It also shows up in my GMC app.  I've called my dealer a couple of times to ask about it and the answer is the same, "remedy not yet available".  I'm at about 35,500 miles and no issues yet.  I'll be due for an oil change soon and I can see me spending the money only for GM to be ready to perform my recall oil change the next week.

The app says the dealer will inspect and as necessary replace the engine. The letter said there was an engine recall but no status as of yet. Why am I getting two different stories and the dealer says GM hasn't even told them what to do yet!

They shouldn't be doing that until its listed as open.  If its incomplete, they can't do the recall and shouldn't be calling.  They can see right in GM's system if its open or not.  My guess is they are just using their dealer manifest list and not actually checking to see if the recall is open.

PM sent.  Should be two letters.  One informing you of it being "incomplete" and may or may not describe the fix, and then a second letter that's along the lines of you can schedule the inspection to be done or if you fall under the other recall version where its just replace the engine.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
