64BAwagon Posted April 29, 2025 Posted April 29, 2025 Between the time I ordered my truck in late March and the day it was built in early April GM had raised the price of shipping from an already ridiculous $1995.00 to $2195.00 I caught this because the Monroney sticker on the window of the truck showed $2195 but GM sent an amended one to the dealer with the original $1995 on it. Since I had an accepted order in the system the cost was locked in at the order sheet price so the new Monroney was sent to the dealer to reflect the correct "pre price increase" cost. The entire shipping metric at Flint has changed recently and my understanding is that now that Jack Cooper transport is gone many of the trucks are being shipped via various (non rail shipments) vendors. GM has clearly found another profit center that likely will not result in better service.
CamGTP Posted May 1, 2025 Posted May 1, 2025 Pretty dumb. That means a transport truck with say 6 trucks on it is $13,170 and we all know the real cost to transport all of those trucks is only a few thousand dollars at most. Maybe a little more if you add in the cost to transport by rail and then by truck.
64BAwagon Posted May 1, 2025 Author Posted May 1, 2025 The typical HD load is 4 trucks, occasionally I see one with 5 but never more than that especially if one or 2 are chassis cabs or duallys. All of the truck that leave via CN by rail end up going to pool yards and then by truck from there to the dealer. My Equinox made it from Mexico almost as fast as my truck to the same dealer. GM figured out a long time ago that there was money to be made off the shipping. Mine stings especially bad since my dealer is only 10 miles from the Plant, some of the shipping storage lots that GM uses are actually farther from the plant than my dealer is. They have yards all over Flint. I do know that GM bought more land on Vanslyke rd to expand their main storage lot. Back when I was a kid you could take delivery of a Pontiac direct from the factory. Sadly that ended a long time ago.
Ry Guy Posted May 1, 2025 Posted May 1, 2025 Plenty of unused parking lot space at the mall. Gonna become nothing more than a storage lot soon if more stores keep closing.

Malls. A combination of the dredges of society treating them like daycare centers and online shopping and they are nearly gone except in the nicer areas of the country.

Sadly that ended a long time ago. I see mine was 2300.00 and now its jumped to 2600.00 in Canada. What really hits even more are smaller SUV's or cars as I see a Malibu is 2300.00 now. So a Colorado is also 2600.00 in Canada and certainly doesn't weigh what an HD does and I assume could load up more of them on a truck load. That means pound for pound you got a lot more beef for your money buying that HD diesel than had you bought a pot licker of a small pickup ! Edited May 2, 2025 by Chuck FB
64BAwagon Posted May 2, 2025 Author Posted May 2, 2025 The deal falls apart when you divide it by only 10 miles. 1

This is very true, those close are subsidizing for those that are furthest to deliver to. More than likely that was one of the factors that fit into the scheme they drew up years ago to end the no cost close deliveries and have everyone pay out their butt to turn it into a money making venture. 1
revrnd Posted May 3, 2025 Posted May 3, 2025 Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the shipping cost the same whether you live 350 miles or 3500 away from the assembly plant? Up until sometime in the 80s Canadian customers outside of Ontario could pick up their vehicles in Oshawa. 1

My understanding from the very early 80's when I worked for a GM supplier and interacted with many GM people is that the west coast dealers complained about their costs to ship so loudly that GM decided on a flat rate. I wasnt in the negotiations so I couldnt say for certain but thats the story I heard consistently. We were wired in enough that my boss at the time had his newer Bonneville picked up by the guys at Pontiac motors and returned the next day with a brand new engine because the original one was going sour.

I'll have to look for the invoice from my '82 K15 that was hauled from Oshawa to Apsley. For me after Friday's shift it, was not quite 2 hours direct.
Z45 Posted May 4, 2025 Posted May 4, 2025 (edited) Its across the board for all trucks and SUV's. Looked at a 2025 Yukon Elevation this am and it was $2195. Makes no difference, its the same no matter where its delivered in US, 5 miles or 5,000 miles, same destination charge. Looked at window stickers of 2 GM trucks on lot here in Michigan. One came from Ft Wayne and the other was Mexico, same destination charge. Edited May 4, 2025 by Z45
