Strange noise

Starting this past Saturday I've noticed a sound coming from my truck that sounds just like a oil can when it pops. I usually hear the noise after driving the truck. Monday it appeared to come from the front... but I heard it again today while approaching my truck after coming out of the store.

 

Anybody else experienced this kind of noise?

 

Any ideas on what it could be? It has me scratching my head.

My stock exhaust system makes all kinds of "Pops", "Boings" and "Bongs" as the metal contracts and expands (mostly when it contracts while cooling). Some are loud enough to startle you. They are usually in the first 5-10 minutes after I shut it down, but I have heard them up to 1/2 hour later.

My 99 w/ 5.3 long bed truck does this noise also.

Kinda sounds like a barrel being popped back into

shape. I have heard this many times and have traced

it to the gas tank.

same here..... ever since I had my sending unit for the fuel gauge replaced (the entire unit under warranty), its been doing this occasionally...

 

Anybody know the cause or how to fix it? Is it because the gas cap isn't venting properly?

It didn't occur to me that it would be the muffler or exhaust pipes, but it makes sense. The noise is definitely a metalic sound. I did think about the gas tank making the sound, however I know the tank is made of plastic so I kinda dismissed that as the source. Anyway I hope it,s not. That's a scary one!
