Silverado Tailgate Spoiler...does it work?

A guy at my dad's planet GAVE him a brand new tailgate spoiler that comes with the 05 pickups...he said he has 3 of them, and likes the "clean" look...so he GAVE one to my dad...and my dad gave it to me.

My question is, does it really do anything? or is it just for looks?

Not true. The tailgate spoiler is part of the areodynamic package to help fuel economy. But this requires that your tailgate is up and putting a tonneau cover on will help by 1mpg.

We don't drive these trucks fast enough to gain by any spoilers

Oh than most of you dont drive 65-70 hwy speeds. Ha Ha

I have to admit, when I first bought my truck, I didn't like the look of it, but it is a nice "handle" when raising your tailgate, a nice flat spot to sit a beer and it after the look has grown on me, it looks fine.

I like it.

Spoilers have one purpose. Downforce. They are only effective on super-high performance cars. IE - F40, McLaren GTR ect..

Your dad has his own PLANET?

Sweet!

I get worse mileage out of my '02 than most people post here on the boards...And my tailgate has that tailgate cap/spoiler thing.

I don't think it does crap. I like the way it looks though....Of course, I like the raised letters on my tailgate too (most people don't)...So I'm weird.

Does anyone know if a 99 Silvy would come with the 4 bolt holes needed to install this badboy?

Also, what bolts would i need to bolt it in?

I would suspect that your 99 does not have the holes. The original tailgate protectors that came on the 99s are just held on by adhesive (tape).

As far as the bolts, I'd suggest maybe just using some sort of metal designed self taping screw or bolt. (Of course drill holes first).

The trucks that have these on from GM originally have threaded peices for the bolts inside the tailgate I believe.

Gas mileage increase - Don't believe it! Good place to set your beer...Yes!
